"You saw what came of it," he said of the fallout from the advertisement.

from the Toronto Star today: More than a dozen former police leaders are urging Premier Doug Ford to reconsider his plan to ban automated speed cameras across the province. In a letter to the premier and his ministers dated Oct. 17, retired chiefs of police from Peel, Halton, Niagara, Ottawa and beyond argued the cameras — introduced by Ford’s government in 2019 — are “highly effective at changing dangerous driving behaviours and reducing collisions and serious injuries at problem locations.” The letter, which comes ahead of the provincial government tabling legislation to ban the enforcement tool, cites research from CAA South Central Ontario as well as a studies from SickKids hospital and Toronto Metropolitan University, as well as municipality-specific data. “The results are clear: when drivers know that automated speed enforcement cameras are in place, they slow down,” the letter read. “This means fewer tickets, lower costs, and safer roads for everyone.” They former executives go on to say that the cameras allow officers to focus on other calls. “Automated speed cameras reduce speeding, injury and death, allowing police to divert resources to focus on criminal activities plaguing Ontario communities such as auto theft and intimate partner violence.” Instead of an outright ban, the former police leaders urged Ford to consider reforms to the camera program, including giving each municipality the ability to decide how best to implement the enforcement. They offered suggestions, including use of automated enforcement in school zones only or issuing a warning rather than a ticket for a first offence. “A well-designed (automated speed enforcement) program focused on safety first will save lives.”

If one is looking for the reason for this policy change, one should investigate how many of Doug Ford's friends/donors have kids who for whom they paid annual tuition fees of 80k or more to attend foreign med schools because they couldn't get into med school here.

The greatest beneficiaries of the new policy will be Ontarians who studied medicine abroad, in places like Ireland, Poland and the Caribbean, where they pay annual tuition fees of $80,000 or more. This small, wealthy group will now be treated on a par with graduates of Canadian medical schools, instead of being treated as international medical graduates (IMGs). The big losers in this puzzling shift from Doug Ford's government will be other international medical graduates, most of whom will now be shut out from the best residency spots by virtue of the fact that they completed high school elsewhere, regardless of where they live now, where they completed their undergrad studies, or whether they have a medical licence from another country.
