Writer, dad, tired. Maybe I’ll figure out how to use this platform better than the others, but no promises.
Went late to RSD shopping and got two of the three things I wanted. I’m not surprised I got shut out of the Son Volt record. Beyond tickled that I found a pristine used copy of Rockpile’s “Seconds of Pleasure” album for only three bucks!

Pretty nice little mail day. I’ve learned the hard way to grab interesting deluxe editions when I can, because they tend to go out of print pretty quickly these days.

Great show last night from The Minus 5 & The Baseball Project. Both bands consist of Scott McCaughey (Young Fresh Fellows), Steve Wynn (Dream Syndicate), Linda Pitmon (drummer for everyone), and R.E.M.s Peter Buck & Mike Mills. Sold out, so the packed 40 Watt was a sweat box. An absolutely fun show!

Safe to say that if The Cure had released their album earlier in the year, they might have breached the walls of the song list and taken it over.

Wife & I got our spooky season started last night with Abigail. Good choice, as this was a fast-paced, bloody, & even charming good time. Alisha Weir is great as Abigail. What a shame the trailer gives away the twist, because I would have loved to have gone into this one more unawares.

Eldest is studying Beowulf in English class, so I pulled out my copy of Maria Dahvana Headley’s modern translation in case she had trouble parsing the version the class was using. Thumbing through it, I’m reminded of what a stellar translation it is.

When I was young and wishing for a life of adventure, little did I realize much of that adventure would take the form of FB Marketplace transactions in sketchy parking lots. Still … new (to me) guitar!

Working on my yearly Halloween mix always threatens to throw off the counts, but this looks about right…

Tonight’s movie night was Talk to Me (still catching up on Halloween flicks I didn’t get to). Really enjoyed this one. Pretty accurate portrayal of how things would go in the viral video age. Since it’s an A24 film, at least one grisly scene you wanted to turn away from. Nicely creepy film.

Car trouble prevents me from joining the rest of the family this year, so I’ve decided on Thanksgiving gumbo and lots of leftover gumbo for the next few days…

A double-feature of Sisu and Violent Night - both ultra-bloody tales of unstoppable Scandinavian men laying waste to bad guys - made for a surprisingly good pairing tonight. Plus, Sisu answers the question of “Is it possible to be a John Wick type badass but talk even less?”

Ouija: Origin of Evil definitely lived up to the word-of-mouth hype. Nicely creepy and way better than the original Ouija. Mike Flanagan has a great eye for ghosts and spooky stuff. I do wonder, though, if the ending was a little hamstrung by having to line up with the first movie.

Somewhere along the line, someone taught me not to skimp when buying tools if at all possible . My best purchase ever might be a set of extra long heavy-duty jumper cables. Been saving my bacon for about 20 years now.

Pretty nice short story mail day with new collections from Kij Kohnson (Book Moon Books) and Malon Edwards (Fireside Fiction) showing up at my door. Can’t wait to dive into these.

Despite Netflix’s usual best efforts to hide new seasons of shows I’ve been faithfully watching from me, I’m delighted there’s a new season of Ragnarok to watch.
