Writer, dad, tired. Maybe I’ll figure out how to use this platform better than the others, but no promises.
Went late to RSD shopping and got two of the three things I wanted. I’m not surprised I got shut out of the Son Volt record. Beyond tickled that I found a pristine used copy of Rockpile’s “Seconds of Pleasure” album for only three bucks!

2 of my son’s friends decided to celebrate Franksgiving, which involves rolling up into their friends’ driveways with a cooler full of grilled hot dogs & drinks, & then standing around the bed of the truck gabbing like a bunch of old codgers while they ate. Awesome.

Pretty nice little mail day. I’ve learned the hard way to grab interesting deluxe editions when I can, because they tend to go out of print pretty quickly these days.

Great show last night from The Minus 5 & The Baseball Project. Both bands consist of Scott McCaughey (Young Fresh Fellows), Steve Wynn (Dream Syndicate), Linda Pitmon (drummer for everyone), and R.E.M.s Peter Buck & Mike Mills. Sold out, so the packed 40 Watt was a sweat box. An absolutely fun show!

Weird how you can hear a band’s music for years and enjoy it but not completely click with it, and then you listen to it, and you wonder if you’d ever really been listening to it at all. Today, it’s Supergrass. Suddenly, that stuff is hitting right.

The fates conspired to put @harvestrecordsavl.bsky.social, Pharmacy Records, and Horizon Récords in my path home today. Who am I to risk the wrath of the fates by not stopping by?

Local classic rock station is doing a day of nothing but Ozzy songs. Every time they play an obscure gem, it’s a reminder of how piss-poor and predictable their normal computerized programming is.

I know Tomorrow Me pretty well, and I think he’ll be really happy with Today Me for filling up the car with gas tonight instead of “I’ll get it in the morning.”

Finally watched The Dead Don’t Die; as much as I thoroughly enjoyed watching Adam Driver & Bill Murray deadpan their way through a zombie apocalypse, & Tilda Swinton doing her thing, I get why some folks were disappointed. There’s a very real sense of the great movie that could have been.

Wife: I need a box.

Me, who’s been refusing to recycle “good boxes” for the last eleven months: Vindication! It’s my time to shine!

When we got power back after Helene, but still didn’t have cable or Internet, we pulled DVDs from the shelves on several nights. My daughter, who loves a good movie night, was quite taken with this. Much to her mom’s chagrin, I think I have a lifelong ally in my support of physical media.

Speaking to a musician at the merch table recently, I said I would get on “the Bandcamps” and “the Venmos,” so I’ve apparently finally turned into a concert-going version of my grandparents.

The universe has conspired to keep me from catching the Southern Culture on the Skids show tonight, but it’s still Bandcamp Friday. Time to pull the trigger on, among other things, a massive collection of Jason Molina demos and a couple of Mark Mulcahy Christmas songs.

Safe to say that if The Cure had released their album earlier in the year, they might have breached the walls of the song list and taken it over.

Got to mark the Mountain Goats off my bucket list. Fantastic show at the Radio Room in Greenville. Most songwriters would be lucky to write 1 cathartic singalong song, but with “This Year,” “No Children,” & “The Best Ever Death Metal Band In Denton,” John Darnielle gave us 3, & the crowd was ready.

I need to start catching bands where I don’t already own all of their merch, otherwise I’ll become known as “that old coot who sidles up and presses gas money into your hand.” Oh well, I guess there’s worse things to be called.

Surprised & sad to hear that Reese McHenry passed away. Her NO DADOS album is one of my fave records of the past decade. Neko Case has a gear that she hits late in a lot of her songs that elevates them. McHenry often started in that gear. Great in-your-face rock ‘n’ roll.

Taking my small joys where I can find them right now, I’ve apparently leveled up as a regular at my favorite Mexican restaurant, as they’ve started giving me giant 32 oz takeout cups instead of the usual 12 oz.

Like a lot of older fans of The Cure, the new album takes me back to Disintegration. But I don’t think it’s nostalgia. Disintegration met us where we were then, getting our lives started, and SOALW meets us now on the other side of that maelstrom we’re still navigating. An amazing piece of work.

Wife & I got our spooky season started last night with Abigail. Good choice, as this was a fast-paced, bloody, & even charming good time. Alisha Weir is great as Abigail. What a shame the trailer gives away the twist, because I would have loved to have gone into this one more unawares.

I enjoy the way a certain cashier at the hardware store says “Good luck!” as she hands me my bag. She’s got me sized up pretty well.
