it's just kind of the same old story? guy has deep-seated dislike for entire categories of people, tells himself a just-so story about how that dislike is principled and how, if you put him and his friends in power, those people would go away and he would be happy for once.

This is, frankly, a huge problem for liberal democracy, which as a system is predicated on loyalty to the political process transcending partisan divisions. But you gotta take the W whenever you can, and if that means running on some light populism, so be it.

In reality, people are complicated, and especially for people who aren’t hyper-political, their politics tend to be informed by their personal experiences. So they lean right on some issues, and left on others. But what unites the normies is a shared hatred of the political system itself.
