But surprisingly, in a large dataset of marine species names, I found the opposite: more epithets are shared across different species than genera.

Some epithets like 𝘨𝘳𝘢𝘤𝘪𝘭𝘪𝘴 and 𝘢𝘶𝘴𝘵𝘳𝘢𝘭𝘪𝘴, for example, appear in more than 600 different species each. 🤯

I'll also be presenting a poster on July 8th, sharing results from our collaborative study with PGSISCO (@ufpr.bsky.social‬) on the climate-driven shifts in the distribution of the harmful microalga 𝘖𝘴𝘵𝘳𝘦𝘰𝘱𝘴𝘪𝘴 cf. 𝘰𝘷𝘢𝘵𝘢.

Had a great time at the @lifewatcheric.bsky.social #BEeS2025 conference! It was a pleasure to present the L.A.N.A. framework and receive such positive feedback. Looking forward to sharing more details officially soon.

Thanks to everyone involved in making it happen!

Heading south: sampling in Torres (RS), where the last rocky shores of Brazil’s southern coast can be seen. From there, it’s hundreds of kilometres of almost continuous sandy beach all the way to Uruguay.

Also note the strong algal bloom in the water.

Quick stop in Laguna (SC), my hometown, to watch the traditional mullet fishing done with the help of local bottlenose dolphins.
