Below are some comments on the LPC platform released yesterday.

If the CPC releases a platform in the next few days, I'll try to find the time for some comments on it.

A few comments on the @mark-carney.bsky.social platform released today. You can find it here: liberal.ca/cstrong/.

I provided some 'sounding board' advice here and there to those working on the platform. As always: I disclose, but you can decide what weight to put on that.

In this piece, I endorse Tufts Fletcher School faculty's proposal that universities challenge Trump's speech-based deportations of non-citizen students in court, and explain why this strategy is much better than letting targeted students fend for themselves: reason.com/volokh/2025/...
Universities Should Challenge Trump's Speech-Based Deportations of Students in Court
The Trump administration has been detaining and trying to deport immigrant and foreign students for their First-Amendment protected speech. That

A very old Soviet joke, from an especially dark time:

Foxes are fleeing the USSR in droves.
Q: Why are you running away?
Fox: The Soviets passed a new law that they’re going to arrest all camels.
Q: But you’re foxes!
Fox: Yeah, why don’t *you* try proving to the NKVD that you’re not a camel.
If you accept that non-citizens have no right to due process, you are accepting that citizens have no right to due process. All the government has to do is claim that you are not a citizen; without due process you have no chance to prove the contrary.

Hi folks,

I’m looking for two education economists who would be interested in presenting their JMPs on May 6th virtually to my econ of ed students. If you have a PhD student going on the job market soon, this is a great opportunity for them to get feedback on their paper & practice their job talk.

Trump is at war with the rule of law and free expression. Business and academia are the big losers. They owe it to themselves as well as society at large to speak up. My latest.
When will US academia and business speak up against Trump?

Donald Trump's war on US trade partners and academic institutions is no surprise. What is more shocking is that corporate and academic leaders have made barely a peep, @drodrik.bsky.social observes.

If you're a professor, you have a LOT of power. Not to freak you out, but authoritarian regimes' favorite first move is to shut down the intellectuals in one way or another. Which means you're a threat to them.

Use your power. Speak out. Go on TV. Give interviews. Be loud!
