Interesting! We don't have a formal policy on this.

I use bluesky in a browser on my phone. It's pretty okay.

Those students are always just behind in lab with respect to lecture but it is what it is. They can still get all the courses in.

We decouple lecture and lab in part because students come in with lecture credit (AP, dual enrollment, etc) and no lab credit, so just need the lab.

We have more lab students than lecture by about 5%. Some students taking lecture have to put off taking lab because they can't fit both.

I would like to know how these courses are viewed by both instructors and students in terms of time commitments.

In actuality, our 1 credit hour intro lab has expectations 3 hours in class and ~3 hours outside of class (1 hour preparation and 2 hours post lab work). 6 hours total per week for one credit. The 1 credit intro physics lab here is even worse.

Wow, interesting. The default that I've heard is one credit hour is 2-3 hours outside of class. Basically a three credit hour class is ~10 hours of week total (in and out of class) per week.

4-5 classes per semester is 40-50 hours of work.

Give it two years and I can ship the kids off to fend for themselves in New York City.

Haha. Yes the Chicago Bulls were named after the literal animal. Let's go with that.

I also have had this fact burned into my brain

I'm a strong believer that student credit hours should reflect their workload as much as possible. STEM students often have more in-class hours with lower credit hours on their transcripts than other disciplines. Labs contribute to this issue along with the number of discussion/recitation sessions.

We wanted to make the lecture + discussion 4 credits to make it better match the work for the students, but were not allowed to as it would make taking intro chemistry difficult with other course requirements for first-year students.

We have 2.5 hours of "lecture" (half is traditional lecture and half is group work). Lab is a separate course (with lecture as a pre-/co-requisite).

We used to have a 1.5 hour weekly discussion section for the course but stopped it to better align class time with credit hours (3 for the course).
