I think policies like the deportation moratorium sent mixed signals to migrants & it’s why I point out how problematic it was that the White House was pursuing two different strategies. But the way theNew York Times ed board wrote about it is not what happened.

I don’t argue that he didn’t make major changes, I try to point out that the policies he chose didn’t have the deterrent effect that experts thought they would have. Title 42 was the most complete closure of the asylum system, more so than his June 2024 border shut down, & it didn’t stop the crisis.
