Heart-lung bypass lowered kidney blood flow by about half and lowered oxygen levels in the kidney tissue.

The brain's blood flow and oxygen levels were not much changed.

When noradrenaline was used, kidney oxygen levels dropped more than with vasopressin.

Does the choice of vasopressors affect renal oxygenation during cardiopulmonary bypass?

Using an ovine model, researchers found that intra-operative noradrenaline worsens renal medullary tissue oxygenation relative to vasopressin.

Hypersensitivity reactions to NMDBs in Aotearoa New Zealand

• Suxamethonium accounted for 14% of usage but was responsible for 40% of POHRs
• Rocuronium accounted for 34% of usage and 44% of reactions
• Atracurium accounted for 41% of usage and only 12% of POHRs

Post-anaesthetic care unit (PACU) and overnight intensive recovery units.

What is the impact?

It builds surgical capacity and system resilience.

Target-controlled infusions have been criticised as too slow for RSI, due primarily to the maximum infusion rate of most pumps (~1200 ml/h).

Effect-site concentrations at time-to-peak effect were nearly identical between target-controlled and manual infusions.

Among 73,813 patients, 9495 (12.9%) lost the ability to live independently after surgery.

Patients who were classified as underweight or living with obesity class 3 or 4 had an increased likelihood of adverse discharge.

Cross sensitivity between neuromuscular blocking agents

If a patient has had a POHR to:
• rocuronium, suxamethonium or vecuronium, then atracurium is the lowest risk alternative
• atracurium, then rocuronium and suxamethonium are low risk alternatives

The chance of having an allergic reaction to a neuromuscular blocking drug is:
• suxamethonium: ~1 in 1500 people
• rocuronium: ~1 in 3300 people
• atracurium: ~1 in 15,000 people

Women were up to eight times more likely to have a reaction than men.
