Started reading “The Silent Companions” by Laura Purcell and oh my god!.. So good! I’m not big on Victorian fiction, but this is just a marvellous book — with a great sense of place and time. And it’s pretty creepy too. Just what the doctor ordered 👻

I freakin miss janky primeval games like the original Alone in the Dark, Primal Rage, Little Big Adventure, and Terra Incognita: Strike Force Centauri 😭

I spent several years after that looking for “Lord of the Rings” cause it was mentioned in the afterword, and I wanted to know what came next. And when I finally got my hands on it, it changed my life. But that, I think, is a whole separate story.

There, I didn’t have much to do but lay in bed play a Soviet ripoff of Nintendo Game & Watch, and read. And “The Hobbit” just transported me to another world. It was like nothing I ever read before (except maybe Durrell’s “The Talking Parcel”).

At the time, me & my mom were on a vacation on Volga. At one point, I got seriously ill, with my body temperature getting as high as 42C (about 107F). We had to leave the hotel where we were staying and move to some of the mom’s friends’ place in a nearby city (I think it was Saratov).
