Had a particularly lovely walk at the weekend because of a friendly robin warming its feet on my shoes🐥

With all the cold weather recently this friendly guy was following us as our footsteps broke up some of the frosty top soil, & seemed to take a particular liking to my boots before flying off❄️

We also find that changing the processing parameters applied to how we classify CryoSat-2 waveforms has a very limited impact on the overall efficacy of lead/floe discrimination.
We therefore generate a bias adjustment to bring the CryoSat-2 data in line with Landsat 8, improving their agreement.

We attribute these differences primarily to differential spatial sampling between the two sensors, off-nadir ranging of leads, and misclassification of sea ice floes as ambiguous.
Examples of these are shown here, which is a simplified version of Fig. 5 in the paper.

We find that, on average, CryoSat-2 detects 45% fewer floes than Landsat 8, and 14% more leads.
This has implications for further radar altimetry processing, including the retrieval of sea ice thickness, and suggests a misrepresentation of complex ice areas.

As the Arctic warms, having high resolution observations of sea ice pack dynamics is essential.
We use 13 years of CryoSat-2 data and near-coincident Landsat 8 imagery to map sea ice leads and floes in the Northwest Passage.

We were using a drone-based LiDAR to assess the feasibility of using a drone for estimating iceberg/sea ice thickness (data processing pending), and got some gorgeous footage of seals in the process❄️

An unexpected highlight from our recent fieldwork in Southern Iceland with @cpom-uk.bsky.social - Jökulsárlón is connected to the sea, so there were plenty of seals in the lake that we caught on camera🦭

It’s also really hard to beat Italian sightseeing🇮🇹

Coming to the end of another fantastic week of my 3-month research visit at ESA ESRIN. I’m working on the next stage of my PhD research, continuing to investigate and (hopefully!) improve on satellite retrievals of Arctic sea ice. Very grateful for this opportunity🛰️

Hi! Starting to make the jump from the ‘other’ place… currently a PhD student at Northumbria Uni researching sea ice from space🛰️ Looking forward to connecting with you all👋
