Some of the change is zoning laws, some of it is cultural. I've been wondering if communal housing like this will come back. 🤷♀️

Also, boarding houses were ubiqitous for quite a long time. And, as unpleasant as it definitely was, there were jobs that came with housing. Farmhand, housekeeper, etc. Not that those were more desirable, but there was at least a broad social acceptance of the idea that housing was a need.

Not disagreeing with your point - I agree that supply is also a problem. I'm just confused by OP's argument that people are all looking for bigger homes when that is absolutely not reality where I live.

Okay but these houses still exist - and they are way less affordable than they used to be. Detroit, Cleveland, etc. I don't buy the argument that people are only finding housing unaffordable bc they're all trying to buy huge homes. That is not the reality on the ground, at least not where I live.
