Really important to stress that the Crown Jewels of the US higher education system were never the Ivies or elite SLACs (other countries have equivalents of these) but the well-funded, large, cheap, and excellently staffed public state university systems bringing high quality education to the masses.
One of the bragging rights that the US ed system had in the 20th century is that we didn't have education tracks. Essentially, any kid could go to a CC or state school & major in whatever they wanted to (obviously an oversimplification). I fear this aspect of the American dream is dying.

especially when she asked sarah what she calls the sound/action sarah makes with her voice in angel and really neither of them come up with the answer because the answer is that it is undefinable. singular.
norah's reverence for sarah is very extremely relatable and i JUST LOVE the questions she asked in this meeting so much.

“When you are dying, at least in my limited experience, you start remembering everything.” Tatiana Schlossberg, the daughter of Caroline Kennedy, writes about receiving a terminal diagnosis. https://newyorkermag.visitlink.me/4SkkDI
A Battle with My Blood
When I was diagnosed with leukemia, my first thought was that this couldn’t be happening to me, to my family.

Any effort to degrade peer review we must be loud about.

NIH’s grant peer review system is sprawling and it is extremely important. The Center for Scientific Review is not perfect. But it works better than any other system I k ow to isolate science grant decisions from political considerations.
