Noemen nieuwe burgemeester uit New York, 'radicaal links' -

Most favorite product for sale in June, cough syrup.

Emphathy is a strength, it's how we forge bound between us, without knowing each other. It's how we stand as humankind.

Read Carl Sagan his Demon Haunted world, which despite coming from the 90s, resonates more than ever today.

As Sagan said, this is home, this is where we make our stand.

Changes? Some for the better, and many for the worse, especially when the sun goes down. With over a million people that have no legal nationality and direct funding cuts, the situation remains vulnerable. Fortunately many kids with smiles, our jobs to keep that smile strong over their lifetime.

Just back from Cox's Bazar. It's been 5 years since my last visit. Many things changed and many remain the same. Wonderful to see old @who.int friends and colleagues and amazing work our @msf.ca collègues are doing. Hope we can do more on surveillance and seeing the impact of long term detention.

When mining companies write articles that are supposed to be perceived neutrals and fact driven but are nothing short of PR and lobby.

Be aware, it's not just the US

Imagine what is being done here. The access to quality education was never really good in the US (look at the rankings), but this is extreme, whole generations will be disadvantaged here. And here we have this soulless privileged dickhead meming around about it.

The Dutch prime minister almost openly mentions that in the eye of the ceasefire, some lives are worth more than others. Yes these subtilities matter, because at one point you should start wondering why much needed aid supplies are not allowed to enter. #gaza

Off to London, to meet work friends, nothing better than the train. Work and moving at the same time.

Eve bluesky friends. Quick tech question (slightly important due to having lost WhatsApp messages of importance. Switched phones, did the backup-restore cycle as usual, but ran into the below error. Obviously wiped my old phone already 😭 Any help/restart/install did not help.

Some really nice presentations today on @msfsci.bsky.social operational research projects related to our migration projects in Europe. A often complex environment to do research but with a more complex environment important to learn how we can do better. #science

Just my two weekly reminder for you all. Read this book. Take Sagan his wisdom.

The best afternoon walks. Enjoying a longer period of leave with the family on beautiful Texel (Netherlands). Our goto place for relaxing.

Cold, wind, a bit of snow and hail, but good clothes and some bitterballen afterwards make up for it!

New estimates on trauma injury mortality in Gaza conducted by colleagues from @lshtm.bsky.social. Some shocking high numbers estimating underreporting of mortality by 41% leading to many more victims 64 260 deaths (95% CI 55 298–78 525), Almost 60% were women, children and those above 65 years.

Indeed, yes scientists should up their comms game, but there is much, much more at play. And those foul mechanisms are not easily swept aside with scientists that communicate better. This is the era we are in.

Newsoutlets increasingly becoming weak in their primary job. Fact finding. Currently many are just dancing on the rhythm of hype instead of doing proper journalism. We have disregarded how important journalism is for a healthy society.

A great example from the Netherlands.

An incredibly negleglected area of focus, action and research as we argued last year post reflections over the COVID pandemic. This was our opinion piece in @plosglobalpublichealth.org at the time: journals.plos.org/globalpublic...
