this episode is... weird as hell. and not just in the subject matter, or even the fact that it is really odd for a show to be this retrospective 8 quarter-hours in - but also that this is just such a fascinatingly structured episode of TV.

18 - overall, i found this one to be generally good, but Adventure Time "eh"? kind of easily the weakest of the season for me, and maybe the weakest AT outing since... 2017(?)

14 - i hope this is the beginning of some science vs. magic stuff coming back to the franchise. just some interesting storytelling angles with how the show chooses to ultimately heal Finn (which I think might actually happen sooner than you'd think - maybe e7?).

12 - this is a weird scene - conceptually, tonally, thematically, pace-ally(?). i get that Cake's "arc" this season is going to be about wanting to be seen as something other than a shape-shifting talking cat - but like - is this really the best way to do that?

8 - i perhaps wish they went a bit farther with the presentation, but i found these DJ F / Fionna scenes to be quite well done. really impressively gets you to understand why Fionna is making so many dumb decisions in a row for a guy we've really only seen be an asshole.

2 - maybe it's because they have new VAs - but i still haven't really felt like these two have had much of a presence at all this time around. like they mostly exist to have cute little antics before Fionna goes off on her adventure.

1 - really beautiful cold open, but i do kind of wish they made this backstory feel a bit more... mythical? like maybe the point is that HW is attached to the earth because of this earthly upbringing, but i just missed how surreal the last weird HW cold open felt.
