Hey folks 👋🏼

I'm Kirsten, a writer, photographer, and former archaeologist near the Peak District. I explore the connection between nature and history through #hiking #climbing #caving and more.

If remote ruins and outdoor adventures are your thing, stick around! 🧭
The most nerve wracking part of Traitors for me would be trying to spell ppls names right

Wrote up my post exploring the history and folklore along the Silk Routes in Kyrgyzstan, and let me tell you, the yaks and horses are insanely cute.

Warning ⚠️: if you're a climber you'll find all the rocks distracting

Just finished watching the ballad of Wallis Island. Witty, original, and the perfect dosage of quirkiness to keep things from getting predictable. Tim Key in particular shines throughout, had ppl in tears of laughter and sadness at various points.

One of the reasons I love Kinder so much is that it invites hikers to slow down and enjoy the journey. Peak bagging takes a backseat to otherworldly rock formations, wildlife, and history here.

It's taken a couple of attempts, but I'm so pleased to have found the dog stone on Kinder!

Today's historic spot: stopped at this old building beside a beautiful river and bridge, against the foot of Black Ashop Moor.

The Peak District is the last spot you'd expect to find machine gun stations, but the park is always full of surprises. These overlook Harpur Hill quarry, where munitions were once stored.

Buried Voices: War, Memory, and Mystery in Rookery Mine
Hidden beneath the Peak District lies Rookery Mine, where faded graffiti whispers stories of lost boys, archaeology under threat of disappearing, and a message that should never be forgotten.

Spotted this funky structure in Stanage today. Surprisingly, it's a grouse drinking bowl from 1907. Each bowl had a number etched next to it so the landowner could track payment of bowls carved.

Unsettling to think how grouse have had such an enduring impact on Stanage's environment and heritage.
