What if you arrived home and found a stranger had commandeered your house?

This is Not Your House is a super neat little VN. Great concept, wacky branches.

Third person prose with second person choices is jarring but beyond that this is fun and scary.

And we return to Buenos Aires! There was less lesbian vampirism here than I'd hoped for, but still an excellent meditation on death with a nice gloomy atmosphere.

Read the above so fast that I had to pick up a new book in the airport. Read it in one go. Haven't done that with something novel length since my teens. Another very honest book, with criticism leveled as Kuang's own writing used in the story. Prose is delightfully restrained compared to Babel.

Best book I've read in a long time. Ever, even? Rumfitt doesn't pull her punches and is unflinchingly honest with her empathetic and complex characters. The horror elements are shocking, but the novel is so well constructed that it feels earned. Take the content warning seriously.

Read this in a morning with a cuppa before my partner was even out of bed. Novellas are a gift to this world. Maybe it's a house that eats men, maybe it's generational trauma. Wonderful stuff.

This collection leans more on social realism than The Dangers of Smoking In Bed. Would have liked to see more horror but still a fantastic read. I love Enriquez's sparse yet evocative style. Big inspiration for my current IF project.

Recent reads! Continued my South American horror phase, took a detour via Brighton and Spain, then picked up something totally different. Thoughts in 🧵.

Reads for the long train journey and week back home 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿. Seems a perfect opportunity to get into a chunky hard sci-fi book, plus I'll finally get to see what the cult of McKee is all about. It's one of those craft books I've had on the tbr for ages.

Last two reads courtesy of 1b books in Heaton! One was so enjoyable that it inspired me to write, the other was so well written that it made me sad to think I'll never be that good.

Both offered perspectives new to me which was a delight.

Well the Yule log failed to burn because of the wind--hopefully not a bad omen for 2025! The food was great tho 😋

As Dusk Falls was so good! One book was the perfect length (3 ish hrs?) for our Yule play session. Writing was spot on. Totally impressed.

I don't think line level is really where my writing shines, but I really enjoyed writing Leah's breathless and rambling style of speech for my last play.

Last day of work doesn't feel like much to me given I've only been in the job a month, but celebrating anyway by going to a birthday party in the dress that I'm OBSESSED with.

Making the most of my last week of unemployment! Walk in the woods plus some banger vegan street food. The chai was to die for!

Another lovely day out! Fiancé and I got tacos then went to the indie bookshop in Heaton. Continuing my South American horror kick 😊

"It'd not exactly practical to strangle a dead person, but a girl can't be desperate and reasonable at the same time." Just finished The Dangers of Smoking in Bed by Mariana Enriquez. Fantastic stuff.
