At no point did political violence become "understandable" after 2014. The only way a system of free and fair democracy can continue to function is if we agree political violence is a hard red line that can't be crossed. The more we normalize it, the more we contribute to its erosion.

You don't get to define what is "good and decent" anymore. Anytime you call out MAGA undermining the norms and values that held this republic together for so long, they'll be able to say you elected a man who wants to kill them and their kids. Whatever moral high ground you once had has evaporated.

Fantasizing about political violence against your opponents — much less their children — is not, in fact, "based". Particularly when trying to brand yourselves as the defenders of democracy and the rule of law.

The intense bonhomie between Milei and Trump is remarkably bizarre, considering Trump is basically our version of Juan Perón.

"communist youtuber Three Arrows" it's always slightly irked me how far-left nutjobs have managed to successfully co-opt what was once widely understood to be a symbol of explicit opposition against monarchism, fascism AND communism.

Depends heavily on who's the incumbent.

True. Brendan Carr's comments were deeply moronic, if not outright dangerous. I think Nate Silver's prediction on what's going to end up happening when the Dems return is probably where we're headed at this point.

I think the reasons behind Kimmel's firing were mainly financial — late-night TV is as unpopular as it's ever been, and Kimmel's ratings are below Colbert and even Fallon. ABC was probably looking for a reason to cut their losses at that point, and Kimmel was dumb enough to ABC a very good reason to

Not really, the FCC's comments about axing Kimmel are definitely a bad sign. The sudden concern among progressive liberals is not, however, coming from a genuinely principled belief in free speech itself, but from a cynical desire to cling to the institutional power they once held before 2022.
September 20, 2025 at 3:32 AM
Progressive liberals once had so much institutional power that it led them to argue against the broader definition of free speech for years up until Trump 2. Now your arguments from that era of politics have been weaponized back at you, and you can't respond without looking incredibly hypocritical.

"Freedom of speech does not mean freedom from consequences" ... or so I've been told.

It doesn't matter how vehemently you disagreed with his politics. Kirk held no position in gov't. He was just a guy killed for engaging in open debate. If that doesn't outrage you, then you have no moral high ground. You can no longer claim to care about this Republic and what it stands for.
September 11, 2025 at 5:45 AM
Most of Bluesky seems to be celebrating Charlie Kirk's death. All that feigned moral authority evaporated in an instant.
September 11, 2025 at 3:11 AM
The people who are taking some kind of smug satisfaction out of Charlie Kirk's death should watch it. They should know exactly what they are celebrating.

No, it isn't. Our system of checks and balances is extensive and robust. Your parliamentary systems of democracy might make you vulnerable to the Orbáns and Erdoğans of the world, but don't project that anxiety onto us.
