Google tells me Germany has 7.8 beds per 1000 people while UK only 2.3 - (have not fact checked) probably not the full story though. Faster discharges and more staff per capita must play a role too. @samfr.bsky.social you did a great substack on NHS recently how you were discharged later than needed

Sorry about your shoulder. As much as one can be - I was relieved my dad needed A&E while visiting my sister in Germany and not here in the UK. Triage happened like in 1 min. Scans and blood tests and in less than 20 min he had a hospital bed. They must have invested more in hospital beds capacity?

Let’s begin with MPs and civil servants - mandatory subscription to the father/son policy Substack. Then, obviously, extend it to the entire nation. Economy solved.

You’ll be able to keep a car, chauffeur and a secretary for ten years after. (Before 2019 would have been even for life) … plus the bonus that your chauffeur might not even understand you so can’t gossip that much in your case 😉

Anyone who thinks promoting a vicious racist conspiracist like Robinson is good for Jews has lost any grip on reality

So true. And maybe today it’s even easier to succeed with no clue at all. When you do have some clue, you end up struggling to communicate the complexity, the nuance … none of which make for good television. Simplicity sells. And sadly, cluelessness often performs better than informed hesitation.

I had not read any of the books in the list. I have followed Helen Thompson’s podcasts and Maggie Haberman’s journalism closely. Both are very good thinkers. And thanks to you - I ordered Second Hand time because it sounded fascinating 😉 on worlds of Books not Amazon though - also a first for me!

It's a big cultural problem as well as a political one in terms of cross-gender friendships/relationships.
