A 16-year-old Oradell high school student pointed out the double standard in objecting to a book “because a boy dresses up in a girl costume,” but not, for example, “‘Captain Underpants,’ a book where a man dresses up in underwear at a school.” Her question drew clapping and appreciative cheers. “This may seem like mockery,” the teenager went on, “but in reality, it exposes the true intention of banning this author from coming: discrimination and censorship.”

Representation matters, especially in congressional districts with a lot of Natives or other minoritized group. The amendment she is criticizing is to use corporal punishment in Alaskan schools, FYI

Rep. Nellie Jimmie says it's a bad amendment, recalling the horrible violence perpetrated against Alaska Native children in boarding schools. She notes that many children never made it home because of the violence.
