In 1956, Nelson moved from Fort Worth, Texas to Portland, Oregon. He soon found a job on KVAN, in Vancouver, Washington, hosting the show The Western Express. Nelson became a popular DJ, while he continued to make live performances. During this time he wrote "The Party's Over".

"There is nothing as whole as a broken heart." Kotsker Rebbe (Hasidic rabbi, 1787-1859) Today would have been Rachel Corrie's 46th birthday. I'm never not moved by Rachel's story. We were politicized about Palestine around the same time in the early 2000s. We had the same teachers at The Evergreen State College and she was one year younger than I am. I often experience a somatic response when I hear a quote from Rachel or listen to her parents speak. My heart feels full and grief pushes it a little further open. Rachel's life can help us all understand the impact of one person. Decades after her death, she still continues to heal us from the tyrant that is imperialism and fuel our movement for a Free Palestine. Her complete allegiance to Palestinian liberation and acting as if her fate were wrapped up with theirs is a unique kind of courage. But we will all have opportunities to act in our own version of complete integrity in our lifetimes. Every day we get a chance to align our lives with what we most deeply care about. Rachel's gift to me was the reminder to sanctify life by protecting it, by living it fully and daring to imagine its possibility beyond our current reality. Rachel laughed and danced with the children of Gaza, she wrote with passion and she was willing to have her heart break wide open dreaming of a Free Palestine.

Listen, the twisted manzanitas that gnarl through the state park with their waxed auburn bark already recall flesh burned to the third degree. Right now, Chuck and Gail's house still stands with its Spanish tile, twin writers' sheds, and framed Sylvia Plath drawing, the flames stopped by the choppers' water bombs half a block from their gate. I've stopped photographing the striped sunsets'® mineral bleed because I don't even want to think the word beautiful when those black-and-fuchsia bands deepen their geodes only due to the smoke and debris. An ex-boyfriend once brought me a quartz-filled rock from a gem store in Richmond where he'd bought digital scales for the weed Mindy drove down each month from Albany. The safety instructions said to break open the geodes using a clawhammer and tube sock. Imagine if instead of men killing women, bosses were killing their employees. Public opinion would be galvanized. Every other day there would be a news story of some boss killing an employee. People would say, things have gone too far. A person should be able to go to work without running the risk of being strangled, beaten to death, or gunned down in a hail of bullets. Now, if an employee murdered their boss every other day, it would be a national scandal. Imagine the news story: three times the boss filed for an injunction and got a restraining order, but the employee waited outside his home and shot him down at point-blank range. It's only when you swap killer and victim that you realize how broadly femicide is accepted. Men can kill you. This fact hovers over us like a cloud. We know it. It's like someone suggesting you play Russian roulette. I've never had a death wish, but I've always loved hard drugs, brutal men, and speed. I've had a lot more people lecture me about hard drugs than about men.
