THE SCRIPTURES YOU LOVE WEREN'T WRITTEN TO KEEP THINGS CALM. THEY WERE WRITTEN TO SET THINGS RIGHT. AND SOMETIMES THE MOST FAITHFUL THING YOU CAN DO IS STOP PRAYING AROUND THE PAIN AND START STANDING INSIDE IT. IF THAT MAKES YOU UNCOMFORTABLE-GOOD. GROWTH ALWAYS IS.

I came to your essay via Anne Helen Petersen's newsletter and it is so, so beautiful. I'm not an English prof anymore but I still believe so strongly in close reading: in noticing, taking the interpretive leap, building an argument - and the broader social value of the effort. Thank you
