Either way, if it ever got traced back to me, I was cooked. Toast. Done. 165 degrees. I swallowed. “Are you okay? That had to be hot.” Quiet laughter echoed in my ears. Well, that answered that question. Mr. Ackerman grimaced, then left me alone. You’re going to get me fired! Do you want to be living on the streets? I think we could swing it. Well, I don’t. Now let me work. Fine, fine… You’re cute when you’re all flustered like that. Don’t call me cute. I blew out my cheeks, then turned back to my computer. I’m not cute. His presence swirled around me, and I shuddered. Beautiful? Gorgeous? Lovely? Ugh. And here I was, getting sexually harassed by the demon in my head. I’d have to ask Victor if there was a way to tune him out. He rested his hands on my shoulders, and I stiffened slightly. Do you mind? I do. And I spent the rest of the morning with him watching me code silly little minigames for children.

I glanced up at her. She still seemed to be asleep, but the bruises on her hands and cheeks had faded. The eternity symbol on her forehead shone brightly, and she was glowing with magic. A small pink tiara had appeared in her hair, and her staff and dress looked more ornate than ever. She truly did look like the magical queen—the magical goddess—she was.

When I got inside, it was a complete and total mess. Jeffrey and Camille were blubbering about how a pink haired woman kidnapped me, Elijah was screaming, Momma had fainted and Dad was fanning her, and Auntie Julia looked like she was going to have a stroke. “I’m fine,” I said quietly, then sat on the couch next to Camille. “I just went for a walk to go see the sunrise, get some air…” “Something’s weird here, and I’m going to figure it out,” Auntie Julia said. “Rose and Dennis have been acting like you’re gonna disappear, Camille claims she saw some pink haired woman in the house, and…” She narrowed her eyes, and I stared at my shoes. “Devontae,” she said, her voice low and even. “Tell me the truth. What’s going on?” “I’m not crazy,” Camille muttered. “I know I’m not crazy. There was a woman, Black, with pink hair, and she took Devontae somewhere. Right, Jeffrey?” He gave her a feverish nod.

I brandished my bracelet, then cried, “Kingdom of Eternity! Give me your power!” In a dazzling display of rainbow lights, I transformed. “What the fuck?” someone cried. I whipped around, swearing under my breath. It was Shae. They were staring at me—at us—like we were aliens. “Devontae? Wait. Creepy McWeeb? Oliver? What is going on? Why are you dressed like that…” They trailed off. “Shae, I’m sorry,” I said quietly, then turned to the others. “Let’s go.” And we all launched ourselves into the air. I swallowed again. I’d just have to hide for the rest of the week. Or month. Or year. Granted, spring break started in a week, and as long as I could sneak around, take my finals, and make my way to the Amtrak station without Shae seeing me, I’d be able to get away with this. Hopefully.

Chiemeka's usually kind of goofy, but when shit hits the fan, the sad magical boys are very quickly reminded that they're knights, and knights serve their queen.

As soon as the sun rose, Chiemeka contacted us. We need to talk. I’m coming to get you all. How long? I asked. My parents are going to be awake any minute, and if I’m not here… A ghostly picture of Alejandro and Chiemeka popped up in front of me. Alejandro still looked out of it, but at least he wasn’t bleeding out anymore, while Chiemeka was pacing the room, glowing with magic—truly looking like the goddess she was. Oliver popped into our connection. He had an ice pack on the side of his face, but otherwise didn’t seem much worse for the wear. My mom’s awake, and if I just vanished… Yijun said quietly, I don’t wanna go. I’m sleepy… Chiemeka’s eyes narrowed. This is serious. As your queen, I’m ordering you to come. My blood ran cold. She’d never gone into “no-nonsense magical queen-goddess” mode before.

The next evening, another monster attacked. I was hunched over my desk, eating cup noodle—since I was too embarrassed to ask my parents for more money—when my bracelet started to pulse. “You’ve gotta be kidding me,” I mumbled. That familiar sickness in the pit of my gut started to spread, and I sighed before pulling on some sneakers and leaving. At least Hector was at Dalia’s place tonight. Where’s the monster? I asked. Near the football field, Oliver said. Saw it on my way back from practice. On my way. I’ll be there. Wait, we’re actually going to fight a monster? Yijun asked. I could practically feel Alejandro roll his eyes. This isn’t all sunshine and roses, he said. It’s part of our mission. Right… We met up at the gym a few minutes later. A massive—at least twenty feet tall—monster that looked like a cross between a spider and a snake was slithering across the football field, hissing with fangs that dripped with disgusting smelling venom. Yijun went pale and clutched his transformation pen to his chest. “That’s… that’s what we’re going to be fighting?” “You were so eager about this earlier,” Alejandro said. “What’s wrong now?” He murmured something under his breath in Chinese, then nodded. “I wanted this my whole life, but now that it’s actually happening… I’m scared.” Oliver rested his hand on his shoulder. “I was terrified too. But we’ll get through it.”

The sad thing is that I really had no way of practicing my powers. The others were immune, and I wasn’t going to experiment on my roommate and his girlfriend. It was unethical. I had a supersonic scream, could put people into trances by singing, and apparently could manipulate people’s emotions by sound. Shitty as hell powers. They weren’t elegant. They weren’t cool. They were just brute force. They hurt their bodies and minds, and… Well, okay. If Alejandro set someone on fire, Oliver blinded someone, or Yijun shoved water down someone’s throat, it was still brute force—but I’d gotten the short end of the stick, powers wise. I sighed, then rolled over. We couldn’t all be Superman.

Momma’s Christmas party came and went, and I spent five hours watching her and her friends get progressively more tipsy as alcohol flowed freely and they gossiped and exchanged presents. I just idly played violin solos and tried my best not to die of boredom. But as they were starting to finish up, I froze up, my stomach tying into a knot. A vision flashed by my eyes of Alejandro fighting a massive monster on the trails outside of Brighthurst. Oh. Could he even do that alone? A pang of guilt went through me. I was technically ignoring my epic magical destiny, after all. But family came first. He effortlessly dodged the monster’s swing, then summoned a fireball and chucked it at the beast’s head before charging forward with his halberd. Yeah, he’d probably be fine— It whipped around and slammed its tail into his body. For a split second, the ghostly outline of Chiemeka’s body appeared in front of him as he was knocked off his feet and nearly into a nearby tree. I bit back a gasp as I fought to keep my face neutral and my hands steady. But he just wiped some dirt off his face and swung his weapon again.

Dad cornered me before they left for their hotel. “What’s up?” “Did you put your mother to sleep?” he asked, his voice cracking. Did I lie? Did I tell the truth? Either way, it wasn’t going to end well for me. I took a deep breath. “No. I don’t have that power.” Hopefully, that “poker face of a toddler” thing I had going on wouldn’t tip him off. He just stared at me like I was an alien. But at this point, I might as well be. Chandra’s words were sticking with me. You’re closer to a potted plant than you are to any of your classmates now. Dad, one of the two people who had raised me since birth, who had loved and supported me through everything… was afraid of me. I couldn’t blame him. I’d hurt his wife. I’d shown superhuman abilities that shouldn’t exist. Before I could say or do anything else, he wrapped his arms around me. “I believe you.” He didn’t. But it’d be for the best if we both just pretended he did.

But I’m not leaving them. You can either fight with us, or you’ll be our enemy. Make your choice.” I could read between the lines here. She loved them just as much as they loved her. I glanced at Alejandro—and watched his heart shatter in real time. Yikes. Tears welled up in his eyes, but he blinked them away, trembling. But he never stood a chance. Even if Chandra was’t in the picture, she didn’t owe him anything. Sure, he’d taken care of her months, protected her, and done everything she’d told him to happily—but it was only because he thought she’d fall in love with him if he did. “Then I’ll be your enemy.” Oh. “I see.” She sighed. “So be it. Have a good rest of your life, Chandra. But I never want to see you again. If I ever see you again, I’ll fight you.” “This isn’t the end of this.” And they disappeared in a vortex of light.

Next Friday, I—mostly against my will—met back up with Chiemeka, Oliver and Alejandro. Alejandro herded us into Chiemeka’s room, and as soon as we got in, that bubble of magic expanded to fill the room, and we all fell to one knee. I have good news! Chiemeka said. I found your final teammate. A blurry picture manifested in front of us, but slowly cleared up. It was of a tall, dark haired man, sitting in a psychology class and looking bored—wait. “I know that guy,” I said. “I spoke to him a couple weeks ago… He’s an exchange student. Said his name was Yujin? Or something like that.” Oh, good. That’ll make it easier to bring him here. Well, it’d explain why she couldn’t sense his magic, at the least. Couldn’t tell if someone was a magical knight if they were halfway across the planet.

I ran all the way from the quad to my apartment, then collapsed near the back. Tears pricked at my eyes again, and I finally completely broke down, sobbing. I clapped a hand over my mouth, trying to keep my tears silent, but it was too much, too much, too much— I screamed. The noise was raw and guttural, and magic ripped from my core—along with my sorrow. It felt like it went on forever. Car alarms went off as tears streamed down my face… But eventually, I ran out of breath. My magic ran dry, and I was left with nothing but a sore throat and the symphony of all the cars’ alarms going off around me. Typical. I pushed myself to a standing position, then silently went back to my apartment. If Alejandro was right about anything, it was that we couldn’t do anything about this. We had our mission, and that came first.

Alejandro started a fire in the center—without even transforming—and we all huddled around it for warmth. “We couldn’t have done this when it wasn’t ass o’clock in the morning?” Oliver asked. “We got caught last time, and we can’t have that happening again.”

“Less about Chiemeka and more about us,” Oliver said. “What are we going to do? I don’t want to die. We’re not even twenty-five, we have our whole lives in front of us, and we’re going to get killed—” Alejandro glared at him, and I pulled at my collar, sweating slightly. Whenever he got upset, the temperature went up ten degrees. But that was just how our magic leaked. Alejandro made things hot, and I could blow out people’s eardrums by speaking too loudly. “We’re not going to die!” he cried. “Why are you being such a pessimist?” “It happened to everyone before, what’s stopping it from happening to us?” “We’re prepared, and we know what’s coming. We can train, and we can fight. We have to have hope.” Hope. I took a deep breath. He was right about that, at the least. Being all doom and gloom about our fate wasn’t helpful—but having your head in the clouds wasn’t either. Oliver deflated. “Hope. Right. I just… My sponsorships are the only thing that keeps the lights on back home. If I died… my mom can’t raise four kids on her own.” “I know. But we’re going to be fine.” Famous last words.

A bubble of bright gold light came from his left hand, and a ring with a bright gold gem appeared on his middle finger. Well, that sealed it. He was one of our teammates. A Knight of Eternity. I swallowed. This was something else. “I’m not gonna lie. Stranger things have happened. Might as well give it a shot.” He thrust out his hand and cried. “Kingdom of Eternity! Give me your power!” And for a moment, nothing happened. But then a blinding flash of light filled the room, and when it faded, he’d transformed. Just like with Alejandro and I, he was in a white suit, but his cape was gold. His hair had gone from dirty blond to a long, shining gold, with eyes to match, but otherwise than that, he hadn’t changed much. Must be nice. But that made it easier for him to get caught. There weren’t many six and a half foot tall, built like a brick wall blonds running around here. Alejandro at least had a completely different hair color, and my… magical form looked completely different than my mundane form. Another bubble of gold light appeared in front of him, and he grabbed it. A golden longsword with an eternity symbol on the hilt manifested in his hand, and he marveled at it. “Wow,” he said quietly. “I’m the Mercenary of Eternity…” “Congratulations,” Alejandro said, his voice flat. “Welcome to Knights of Eternity-ville: population, three.” “I’m not gonna lie, this is weird, but… Glad to be here.” He clapped Alejandro on the back, and he let out a quiet squeak. I couldn’t help but wince. Oof.

I swallowed again, then cried, “K-Kingdom of Eternity! Give me your power!” And for a split second, nothing happened. For a split second, my heart fell. She was lying. She had to be lying— Then a spiral of rainbow light burst from the bracelet and wrapped around my body. Everything else melted away, and in that moment, it was just me and the magic latent in my soul. I closed my eyes, letting it take me—transform me—into whatever it wanted. Beautiful music echoed around me as I slipped into my magical form—my true form. Before I even knew what was happening, it was over. I took a few deep breaths. Everything was different. My center of gravity was higher, and… I glanced at myself in the nearby mirror, then did a double take. I was wearing a white, frilly suit, with accents in silver, and a silver cape billowing behind me. I even had matching boots and gloves.

I fell into a vision. Chiemeka and Chandra were standing in front of a massive throne, looking down at four people—two women, one man, and one nonbinary person. Their colors were green, orange, black and white. The original Knights of Eternity…. The Healer of Eternity, the Soldier of Eternity, the Fighter of Eternity, and the Guardian of Eternity… The Healer had her staff, the Soldier, a sword like Oliver’s, the Fighter a pair of fisticuffs, and the Guardian, magical string. Chiemeka was practically glowing with magic, her pink dress ten times as beautiful and fancy, while Chandra was in a cross between a purple suit like ours, and a dress like hers. They both looked resplendent. I swallowed. “You’ve been chosen to fight a great evil. If you succeed, you’ll be given a place in the Kingdom of Eternity, eternal life, and magic stronger than anyone here,” Chiemeka said, her voice hard. They nodded. And they fought. But all I could do was watch as a… darkness overtook the kingdom. They fought their hardest, but… failed. They were struck down one by one. They transcended permanently, but it wasn’t enough. All they could do was temporarily push it back. The power of literal gods in human form wasn’t enough. And if that wasn’t enough… That was it? That was what were going to fight? An all-consuming darkness that could overpower gods? The scene changed, and I saw countless numbers of knights throughout the years try to defeat it and fail. Tens of knights. Hundreds of knights. And they all failed.

They saw red, and before I could do anything, rushed over to him and grabbed him by his collar. “What are you doing?” I cried. “Leave him alone!” “You need to leave Devontae alone,” they snarled, pulling him down to their level. “I don’t know what you’ve done, or what you’re doing, but if you fuck with him again, I’m kicking your ass!” “Shae, cut it out,” I said. “He’s not blackmailing me.” Alejandro just glared at them, and his eyes flashed red. I grimaced. They didn’t know the truth, and if Alejandro and I had our way, they never would. “I’d like to see you try,” he said coolly. “You’re such a fucking creep,” they said. “I don’t get what Devontae sees in you as a friend.” A small crowd gathered around us. What did I even do here? If Alejandro used his true power, it’d be a curbstomp. We weren’t human. We were faster, stronger, and had magic that most people were sure only existed in comic books. And sure, Alejandro was my leader, but Shae… I’d do anything for them. “You really don’t know who you’re fucking with, do you?” he said, smirking. “I think I do.” He merely grabbed their wrist, and they cried out in pain before stumbling away. The smell of burning flesh filled the air. “What are you doing?” they cried, twisting in his grip. “Alejandro, what the hell?” I hissed, wedging myself between the two of them. “In public?” He let them go. “Don’t mess with me ever again. You might be Devontae’s friend, but I’m not afraid to fuck you up.” He picked his books up off the ground and walked away. So much for keeping the magic a secret. But who would believe me if I said he nearly set them on fire?
