Highlander in the Borders. Academic. Here for the RPG chat, mostly. Groggish. Emerged from the deep freeze a few years ago and trying to catch up...not interested in your political views, or trial by social media - take that to 'the other place', please.
Just started the Shadow of the Gods by John Gwynne - already completely hooked by the propulsive writing style (reminiscent of Abercrombie) and brutal Norse inspired world - complete with #vaesen!

A wee trip to my favourite #bookshop this morning @wedale-bookshop.bsky.social - though sorely tempted, managed to restrain myself at least a bit 😂. Looking forward to these, and love the ‘mystery’ book complete with Norwich themed clue and wrapping (a gift for no.1 son)!

Obligatory pilgrimage to Idle Hands while in Manchester, for their brilliant #coffee and #pie (a pumpkin pie to convert even the most sceptical, believe me!)

Pleased to report The #Witcher season 4 is a fun watch, even sans Cavill. The plot is daft, but Hemsworth does a good job, there are great action set pieces and some real emotional heart. If you enjoyed the first 3 seasons, you’ll most likely enjoy this one too. If you didn’t, you most likely won’t!

The mad pup approves too 🐕 🍂

Well, Autumn here in the Borders is pretty splendid, no? 🍂 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

In Sweden so a quick stop at the local (Lund) gaming shop - first foray into The One Ring, couldn’t resist the Alien Game Mother’s (!) screen and Ikhon for Mork Borg. Fine Scandi fare all, a little cheaper than in the UK, but no P&P makes it worthwhile - at least that’s what I’m telling myself 😏🇸🇪🤓

A must visit whenever I’m back in Manchester - Idle Hands for great coffee and pie (key lime this time) 🥧 ☕️

Was trying to decide whether to dip my toes in the #Alien or One Ring systems - have plumped for the Alien starter set, which looks great! And I have few sci-fi things but *oh so many* fantasy systems/supplements already…thanks for the advice @cottonmouthmcr.bsky.social

Infiltrating the temple via the sewers, navigating plague rat swarms, meathook-wielding butchers & cursed shrines with a plan (of sorts..) to avoid cultists and find ‘the thing’. Thanks @jaje7406.bsky.social, @daftoldefart.bsky.social, @blythygrog.bsky.social, Ste & Charles for the usual #DCC fun 😁⚔️

On my way to that there Manchester again for more ftf #DCC fun with The Expendables - session 20 of our ongoing shenanigans (!). Harley Stroh’s Blades Against Death is a bit of a corker 😏
September 28, 2025 at 9:20 AM
Been inspired to look out some of my old #Aliens comics from the early ‘90s - some lovely cover art, and looking forward to rediscovering the innards (so to speak!)

The latest episode only made me go and order this, you fiends! It arrived today - only had time for a quick flick through so far, but it already has me cackling like a hen 😂 #DCC

I hadn’t even noticed the beautiful spine art 🤩💀
September 13, 2025 at 7:30 PM
Figured it was time to upgrade from my battered and slightly falling apart paperback #DCC core rulebook, and couldn’t resist the siren call of this gorgeous thing today (DCC Day 2025 limited edition), while
browsing at Black Lion Games (a small but amazingly well stocked Edinburgh gaming shop) ⚔️ ☠️

Inspired by the latest episode of @thegrognardfiles.bsky.social and the magical Lankhmar chat with @blythygrog.bsky.social and @davepaters.bsky.social, I have been *compelled* to order this gorgeous looking graphic novel by the amazing @mikemignola.bsky.social

First ramble around Kelso yesterday - the ruins of the 12th C Abbey are pretty atmospheric (destroyed by the English army led by the Earl of Hertford in 1545)…

After starting The Wheel of Time about 35 years ago (!), I just finished all 14 books for the first time, after stalling a few times around bk 9. Truly epic, but worth it? tbh, think it would have been much better as a less bloated 3-5 book series. Still loved it though, despite the 11.5-12K pages!

If you’re in need of a genuinely heartwarming (but also laugh out loud) pick me up - I’d heartily recommend watching the Ballad of Wallis Island. I think Tim Key might be a bit of a genius…

Well, Poor Things is a bit brilliant, no? I don’t think I’ve ever seen anything quite like it…Emma Stone deserved that Oscar (Mark Ruffalo also great, apart from a shockingly wandering accent 😂). Imagery I’ve never seen before, and will long remember. A fantastic film, if completely crackers 🤪

It’s piccalilli season once again, (amazingly). Packed with the best of crunchy, zingy, vinegary, mustardy veggies, and making shop bought overcooked ‘wallpaper paste’ versions pale in comparison, this will be ready to feast upon about a month from now 😊.

Aha! World of Books delivery today, some of the ‘classics’ currently unavailable streaming in the UK (harrumph) - thanks @fenrisgames.com for the tip 😊. About to watch Time Bandits for the first time since the 1980’s with number 1 son (who’s never see it), in the ongoing quest to educate 😁.

#Foraging types, are these hen of the woods? Loads growing around some old tree stumps in the garden, but not entirely sure if they are edible (and I value my kidneys) #mushrooms 🍄‍🟫 🐓 🌳
August 25, 2025 at 10:24 AM
Trying to watch Conan the Destroyer, Time Bandits or Name of the Rose with number 1 son for the first time (in continuing quest to educate with the ‘classics’) and none of them are available to stream in the UK! 😡 Reduced to watching Legend 🙄 (hoping it’s not as boring as I remember from bitd…)
