Wonderful presentation by @hellobrittparis.bsky.social on AI in higher ed @aaup.org Summer Institute. AI in higher ed is NOT inevitable.

Haven’t been skeeting much because being offline more helps me during these end times. Here’s my morning backyard walk with Mina!

I feel extremely pessimistic these days. But today I watched my students present their work that imagines a much better world and it reminded me that I still really want to be a part of that ❤️

Today, @jeremydavis.bsky.social filled up a 100+ person lecture hall at my university with his excellent talk on the ethics of using predictive algorithms in military contexts. It was so rewarding to watch a room full of students thoughtfully engaging with a complex topic with high moral stakes.

I looked outside and saw our bonded pair of ferals - Orange and Squinty - sleeping peacefully in a bed of dry leaves, and suddenly, the world was beautiful.

I was asked to share my thoughts on AI with fellow faculty. I decided to talk about how OpenAI's notoriously shady organizational and business model tells us all we need to know about the values embedded into their products. Hoping to convince at least some folks that GenAI is not "just a tool."

My university’s teaching center has been sending these in their newsletters for WEEKS and I’m starting to lose my mind.

Today is a very happy and important first for me: My student is presenting their excellent project at an undergraduate philosophy conference. I couldn't be more proud of them!

One little thing that made me happy during otherwise terrible times is that I finally decorated part of my office. I used mostly archives of Slovak National Gallery and a coupe of my all time favorites sprinkled in. Featuring some anti-fascist works, naturally.

I'm looking forward to the upcoming virtual Central APA @apaphilosophy.bsky.social! I'll be presenting on geoengineering technologies with my wonderful former student Noor (who initiated the whole project) as a part of the inaugural Climate Hub.
