Surprise surprise the peer-led programs are usually preferred. They’re more flexible, harm reduction focused, and generally supportive of recovery as a process

Things I have heard about: being fed mouldy bread, strip searches, no talking, 24hr monitoring, forced labour, calls being withheld for “bad behaviour”, forced church attendance, etc.

It would be nice to have a business model that doesn’t rely on exploiting trauma in the name of abstinence (and Jesus) but maybe that’s too much to ask for

There’s so many programs that have very questionable practices… and they make a lot of money. A LOT of money.

Like there’s so much funding being thrown at “more treatment beds” but there’s no oversight on what is being provided by these programs
