When the world gets tough the tough read romance, so I'm breaking the glass on my Daughter of Tides ARC. Rocha builds beautiful queer-normative worlds and that's exactly what I need right now. 💗🌈💗

(Went up Mt. Takao yesterday - it was nice but too cloudy for good views. Made the obligatory shrine visit, because of course.)

Always, always have a native speaker check your work, otherwise all the native speakers climbing your mountain will (best case scenario) giggle at said work for yeeeeears.

And while I call it a "magazine" it's trade paperback size, 300 pages and just 1.2cm/0.5in thick, with essentially no ads. The paper is cheap by Japanese standards, but better than some American trade paperbacks. Worth the sticker price of ~$10, for sure.

Many news mags are right wing ("Gender equality is to blame for the low birth rate") but I finally found one for me - 世界 or "World". A main theme this issue is "Questioning Colonialism" with articles about Palestine, Okinawa, West Africa, and more. Excited to dig in and mark it up! ✍🏻

My new neighborhood has ten times the flowers of my old one, and I'm on a mission to learn their names. This one is everywhere right now - native to China, widely grown in Japan... and named after a British botanist's wife. 😒

So in my head it will exist as 木香茨 (mokkou bara). It's only fair.

I haven't been able to finish a nonfiction book since I moved, no matter how amazing it is, but I am itching to try again. This library discard has been staring at me from the shelf - essays on Native sexuality, let's gooo~

Today I went back to Daiso and got another - not as a replacement, but as a companion. I love that simple, well made things can be found at all price points, and I won't be letting go of these if I can help it.

This spatula is one of my best purchases ever. I got it over a decade ago and use it nearly every time I cook. It handles anything in a frying pan, stirs chai beautifully, and even doubles as a rice paddle.

Where did I get this dream utensil? Daiso. It cost ~$1.

Those breaks did not make it to the ARC 😅

I started my ARC of Fake Flame by @adelebuck.bsky.social on the way home and this opening scene is exactly what I needed after a stressful day at work! The humor of the situation, the kind consideration of Sean, and the way Eva stands up for herself are 🔥🔥🔥 Can't wait to read on!

Looking at my Goodreads and wow, I love tropes that start with the letter F 😂

Few books are keeping my brain happy right now but The Lily of Ludgate Hill by Mimi Matthews is just the thing. It's a second (third?) chance romance where they can't stay away from each other, no matter how hard they try. The first book, The Siren of Sussex, is great, too!

I'm trying to tell my husband how bad Kissinger was but the Japanese wikipedia article does not do him justice.

Him: I don't see what the big deal is, this is just politics.

Started Unwritten Rules by K.D. Casey today and it sucked me in! We have the makings of a slow burn romance between two catchers, with the perfect amount of baseball nerdery thrown in (well explained, of course). Just the compulsive read I need right now! #Romancelandia

Started My Rogue to Ruin by Erica Ridley and it's everything I want and need right now - caper! An artist heroine with synesthesia! A hero that will move mountains for his sister, and may have to because ooo he got mixed up with some bad dudes and is in trouuuble 👀 Will she help him??

Somebody call the travesty department - persimmon season is here and we're still hitting 32C/90F every. dang. day. This isn't right 😭

Silly me quickly scanning Best By dates 😭

"5.3.26" is not May 3rd, 2026

it's this year of the emperor's reign, Reiwa 5, March 26th. Oops.

The tea was unopened and smells great, so it's kukicha for my foreseeable future! 🍵

I'm not saying I buy sweets because the wrapper would make a nice book cover... but it doesn't hurt.

I have been incredibly busy and stressed lately so it was a treat to spend a bunch of today reading this. It's a balance of fun and low-stakes angst that's perfect when I want to disconnect from the world a bit.
