We asked OpenAI to try again but this time, to include context in popular culture and it wrote something very similar to ours above.
OpenAI’s second attempt: A Shiba Inu sits upright on a beige couch, paws crossed, looking sideways with a wide-eyed, skeptical expression. This is the well-known “Doge” meme image, often used in popular culture to convey humorous internal monologues written in multicolored Comic Sans, such as “wow,” “so surprise,” and “much wow.”

We aren’t big fans of AI, but we live in a world where it’s a thing. So we are testing OpenAI’s ability to generate alt text of common images.

We think it did ok. We would have added context that it’s the common “doge” meme and described that a bit.

1st one:
OpenAI wrote this image description: A Shiba Inu sitting upright on a light-colored couch with its front paws crossed, giving a wide-eyed, suspicious side-glance. A blurred human hand reaches into the frame near the dog. We would have written something like: A light brown Shiba Inu dog on a light-colored couch with its front paws crossed. The dog is giving the viewer a wide-eyed, side-long, ambiguous look that many people view as surprised, amused, or dubious. The image is used for the popular 2014 “Doge” reaction meme, and is often accompanied by amusing, grammatically incorrect expressions such as “so dog” and “much wow”.
