Tarje, now at the University of Exeter, and Simon began assembling their teams. They would need to develop an ultra-high-frequency variant of seismology. A big obstacle was cost. In 2022, suitable sensors cost $10,000 (£7,500) apiece. They managed to repurpose other kit: Tarje found that a geophone developed by a Slovakian experimental music outfit worked just as well, and cost only $100. Now one of our scientists, Jiayao Meng, is developing a sensor for about $10. In time, we should be able to use the accelerometers in mobile phones, reducing the cost to zero. As for generating seismic waves, we get all the signal we need by hitting a small metal plate with a welder’s hammer.

We've already had dangerous and mislabeled Far-UVC shown this year, the manufacturers saw there is zero blowback from that, so have no reason to stop. There's nothing to stop schools from buying bad Far-UVC. Yes, Nukit emitters are properly third-party tested, but what if schools choose something else? Most companies won't even submit to third-party testing of their power output. Who wants to point an emitter of unknown power at their kid all day? Because the manufacturer pinky promised they aren't lying like last time? It's hard to advocate for Far-UVC in schools *right now*, when the industry fights regulation and refuses to self-regulate. Most "Far-UVC advocates" are conflict-averse, so just make meek "We want Far-UVC" posts for easy likes and social capital, or have conflicts of interest with Far-UVC manufacturing and won't insistently push for any sort of standards or even demand third-party testing. If you are looking for a loose framework to start with, you can pull so much from infosec- defense in depth, single point failure issues, not relying on security through obscurity (using mitigations with limited supporting evidence that have not been "pressure tested"), user compliance issues- the list goes on and on. Most importantly, just an overall adversarial mindset "how will they try and break/stop this?", because people are actively trying to remove and bypass biosecurity measures for convenience or profit, if not necessarily maliciously. I think one of the main problems with exclusively applying a mechanical engineering or medical mindset to biosec with no other tools in the box is that those professionals don't usually have an adversarial framework- they plan for failure well, even brute force vandalism, but they tend not to prepare well for an intelligent resisting opponent- which we have in biosec. We are up against articulate, well-credentialed individuals who have been successful in arguing in favor of inhaling other people's saliva for its health benefits. That's a hell of a Final Boss. You really need the equivalent of LockPickingLawyer to take apart your IAQ measure and find all the ways failure can be deliberately induced, either physically or administratively. Up until recently, the best way we had to measure the effectiveness of any form of GUV was whole-room pathogen load. Take a hermetically sealed chamber, spray your testing pathogen of choice in, turn on your GUV, and measure the drop in viral load over time. Pathogen chamber testing works with both air purifiers and Far-UVC. So the thinking was, if the level of pathogen inactivation of a Far-UVC lamp is the same as that of an air purifier, then the CADR is the same- we'll call it equivalent, or E-CADR. So a Far-UVC device with an e-CADR of 300 will, in theory, have about the same effect on whole room pathogen load as an air purifier with a viral CADR of 300. There are a few things that complicate this- exactly which pathogen is tested, etc but that's the short version. This is the point papers like @Blueprintbio get to, which is unfortunately, quite a bit behind. The problem with e-CADR is that we measure a thing for what we actually want it to do, not what it also happens to do when doing the thing we want. Some things are not as useful a proxy as they seem. We can measure how many times a bike's tires turn- but if we bike around all day, that won't tell us exactly how far we are from our starting point in a straight line. We use Far-UVC to stop infections and reduce sickness. When it does that, it also lowers the overall pathogen load in the room, but the relationship between the two is not linear. As we saw in this recent article: https://nukit222.com/blogs/info/far-uvc-and-filtration An air purifier and Far-UVC lamp setup that has the exact same effect on breathing zone (whole room) pathogen load- and so the same CADR, can have an incredibly different effect on breathing box load- and so actual risk of infection. So trying to use CADR and e-CADR interchangeably to indicate infection risk does not work very well. They say "the purpose of a system is what it does" (POSIWID). What Far-UVC does as a system- is reduce infection risk, so a useful metric needs to quantify that reduction- e-CADR does not. We also say "all models are flawed, but some models are useful". Is e-CADR useful as a model? It's hard to say. One of the original reasons for trying It's hard to say. One of the original reasons for trying to popularize it was that CADR is a relatively well-understood metric and the calculations are straightforward. The hope was this would make Far-UVC more friendly and accessible to the HVAC industry. The problem is that the HVAC industry is incentivized by maintenance contracts, not by air quality, and will generally advise against or refuse to implement anything that might conflict with that income stream. This is why electrostatic precipitators are so rare. Far-UVC is essentially an electrical fixture and can be installed by a qualified electrician- traditional HVAC skills don't apply well. This is understandably not something they want to encourage as an alternative to upgraded ductwork and new blowers. Once installed, the additional ACH each Far-UVC unit provides instead of mechanical filtration represents less service calls and fewer filter changes. If any given customer wants to reach higher ASHRAE ACH recommendations, the last thing a HVAC contractor is going to do is install GUV and give up all the income from future maintenance required for high ACH systems. Again, that's their primary income stream, and each GUV install literally erases it. They can't survive off new installs alone- the money is in service. So, five years in, hoping that ASHRAE or the HVAC industry will one day accept Far-UVC if we just make it easier to configure is most likely a fool's errand. Using e-CADR as even the roughest measure is probably pointless, although we'll have to see, it might fit in somewhere. The problem is that even without that, we still don't have a very useful consumer metric for how much Far-UVC per room, all we know is that e-CADR isn't really a very good proxy for what we actually want to measure- reduced near-field transmission potential. Given the current tariff situation, their cost could potentially double when that stock is depleted and more have to be shipped on. Normally, we say if you can wait, wait, because we will make Far-UVC cheaper next year, but in this case, for Americans, unless something changes, Far-UVC- from all companies given all use Chinese parts, is likely to get much more expensive. --------------------------- As mentioned before, a few current batch of Lanterns has issues with the latching power button failing to depress on some units- acting as a momentary button instead of a switch. Tweet screenshot 2 of 3: The warranty for this issue covers the 3000-hour working life of the bulb. For some people, a bad button latches when fully depressed with a chopstick or similar, which then becomes non-issue because they are using the external wired power and movement sensor. This is one workaround, but of course, you can also opt for a replacement. If you would like to wait for the next batch instead of risking another unit with the same issue, we'll of course offer replacements later. Under no circumstances will you be stuck with a product that does not perform as advertised. It's entirely because of our customers' patience, understanding of the typical issues that come with new hardware development, and willingness to accept replacements that we are able to rapidly bring affordable Far-UVC to market.
