What Los Angeles County Contributes to the U.S. Federal Budget In 2022, Los Angeles County contributed $72.6 billion in federal personal income tax revenue. That amount was 3.5 percent of all U.S. income tax revenue. It exceeded the tax contribution of any other U.S. county and even the entire state contribution of any one of 43 U.S. states. Los Angeles County’s tax contribution funds the entire annual expense of operating the U.S. Navy's aircraft carrier fleet, all of the Navy's attack and ballistic missile submarine fleet, and the entire U.S. Marine Corps. If you prefer to consider non-military expenditures, L.A. County’s contribution funds almost all of the combined annual expense of the U.S. Department of Justice and Department of Homeland Security. California is one of only 13 U.S. states that sends more money to the federal government than it receives, a recent analysis found. Why it matters: As President Trump pushes for states to become more financially independent, the Golden State is one of the least reliant on the federal government.

I don't actually comment on those posts. I happened to here because everyone was piling on to a valid opinion. I pretty much follow ahimsa.
I'm not sure what you expected in response your post. Why lecture? Not everyone is going to see resistance the same as opposition.
This is a bullshit take. There's plenty of examples of them pushing back in your replies. Once again: shitting on dems isn't a useful strategy.

On Monday, The Washington Post reported that the White House has begun work on estimating the costs of controlling Greenland in “the most concrete effort yet to turn President Donald Trump’s desire to acquire the Danish territory into actionable policy.” Once these kinds of meetings start taking place in the White House, the next step is usually to send out orders to the rest of the American national-security establishment, including the CIA and the Pentagon, to begin planning for various contingencies.

I got so fed up w/ how language is being misused and abused by the media and contemporary society, I made it a newsletter. And yes, it will feature #HotMessHeadlines.

But today I argue for using the word 'dictator' for a general #audience.

So did you present evidence in court? Because this of course, did go to trial. And you and the people you were representing won that trial. Did you find evidence that you presented in court that the purpose of the AI was told to cost cut? DE LIBAN: Yeah. That's what it was programmed to do. So the best-case scenario, so under the previous system, where nurses decided how much care to give people within guidelines, a step by the state, the maximum was eight hours a day of care. And again, that is not enough for most people with cerebral palsy or quadriplegia. Most other states actually provide significantly more than eight hours a day of care as a maximum. When the algorithm came in, the best case scenario for most people was five and a half hours a day of care. So there was no scenario in which you got subjected to the algorithm and somehow won an increase. And that's where the shell game is of this, is your whole possibilities are structured to decide how much of a cut you get, not whether there's any chance of actually getting an increase in hours, at least for the people at the highest levels of need.

Upon his arrival in the U.S., the academic underwent a random inspection during which his computer and phone were allegedly examined. News outlets that obtained those records before they were sealed reported that Alawieh had photos on her phone of Hassan Nasrallah, the leader of the Lebanese militant group for the past three decades. The Boston Globe reported she also had pictures of Hezbollah “fighters and martyrs” on her phone.

Schilling said his group tested a lot of issues to find what stuck the most out to people. But it didn't matter how popular the issue was, they needed issues that politicians felt comfortable talking about, Schilling said. That turned out to be trans children in sports, Schilling said.

💯 I live in #Philly b/c #Amtrak allows me to work here, or anywhere between DC and NYC (and "share" custody of my daughter). I wouldn't have been able to take my first job after repatriating w/out Amtrak and not having it would cut my current job prospects...by a lot.

Nasruddin Amer, deputy head of the Houthi media office, said the airstrikes won’t deter them and they would retaliate against the U.S. “Sanaa will remain Gaza’s shield and support and will not abandon it no matter the challenges,” he added on social media. Another spokesman, Mohamed Abdulsalam, on X, called Trump’s claims that the Houthis threaten international shipping routes “false and misleading.” The airstrikes come a few days after the Houthis said they would resume attacks on Israeli vessels sailing off Yemen in response to Israel’s latest blockade on Gaza. They described the warning as affecting the Red Sea, the Gulf of Aden, the Bab el-Mandeb Strait and the Arabian Sea. There have been no Houthi attacks reported since then. Earlier this month, Israel halted all aid coming into Gaza and warned of “additional consequences” for Hamas if their fragile ceasefire in the war isn’t extended as negotiations continue over starting a second phase.

Unfortunately, the former president has made it VERY clear that detainment or even military action would not stop with illegal immigrants or even immigrants, but also threatens these “enemies” with such actions. The Alien Enemies Act, passed in 1798 as part of the Alien and Sedition Acts, would allow him to do so. The Brennan Center points out that the authority that permits summarily detaining and deporting civilians merely on the basis of their ancestry was not repealed or amended after World War II when it was used “for interning immigrants of Japanese, German, and Italian descent.” The flaw of the law is that it targets “people on the basis of their identity, not their conduct or the threat they pose to national security.” The Brennan Center also notes that “Worse still, the language of the law is broad enough that a president might be able to wield the authority in peacetime as an end run around the requirements of criminal and immigration law.” Under what conditions can the president invoke the Alien Enemies Act? The president may invoke the Alien Enemies Act in times of “declared war” or when a foreign government threatens or undertakes an “invasion” or “predatory incursion” against U.S. territory. The Constitution gives Congress, not the president, the power to declare war, so the president must wait for democratic debate and a congressional vote to invoke the Alien Enemies Act based on a declared war. But the president need not wait for Congress to invoke the law based on a threatened or ongoing invasion or predatory incursion. The president has inherent authority to repel these kinds of sudden attacks — an authority that necessarily implies the discretion to decide when an invasion or predatory incursion is underway.

Has the Alien Enemies Act been used in the past? The Alien Enemies Act has been invoked three times, each time during a major conflict: the War of 1812, World War I, and World War II. In World Wars I and II, the law was a key authority behind detentions, expulsions, and restrictions targeting German, Austro-Hungarian, Japanese, and Italian immigrants based solely on their ancestry. The law is best known for its role in Japanese internment, a shameful part of U.S. history for which Congress, presidents, and the courts have apologized.
