Tendrils
Soft pastel on ingres, Nov 2025

Another practice piece. Working out how to get depth with pastel. Also trying out masking tape methods for clean lines, very challenging with such an unstable medium.

Brown bands impose at the forefront, beside another brown splodge sitting at a prominent place. A vague attempt to understand Cuffian's style. Learned a little bit, mainly not to overload the space, and that wet-smudging soft pastel is not as good as wet-smuding oil pastel.

Squash Leaves In Abstract - October 2025

I visited a pumpkin patch with my wife for our third anniversary and felt inspired. Using this as a chance to try out some new methodologies from an abstract painting book by Rolina van Vliet.

"Somewhere Somewhen" - Soft pastel on ingres paper. July-Augist 2025.

I used a lot of different techniques to end up at this result. It looks better than I imagined it would, but I have a long way to go in terms of composition study.
A pastel painting consisting of four cornered quadrants in orange, green, blue and purple shades. A pink band separates the quadrants, which has blended into the quadrants to create unique shades. In the centre of the panel a pink diamond is enveloped by cream and brown diamonds.

Biggest courgette of the year. I didn't spot this one as it started to grow and it ended up getting another three weeks than I typically leave them. Calling this one the moregette.

I tried to fix this piece with a fixing spray and ruined it (pic 1). All the layers compacted and darkened. I added some more pastel but it didn't look good.

So I just redid it applying everything new I've learned since. (Pic 2)

This is the third attempt at this piece and I'm finally satisfied enough to leave it alone for now. Maybe I'll try again when I've learnt more but for now I'm moving on to other ideas.

I don't have a title for this one as the process was a lot less structured than prior pieces. Wanted to see if it's possible to get a matte colour onto this paper using pastel alone.

I don't like everything about how this turned out. Most happy with the upper third, that purple shade took a long time to get right.

I'm feeling generous, so here's the WIP shot of my current piece. Flat colours are in. Need to blend a lot of this, then work out the loose pastel. Second layer will define the rock face, and deepen the water/foliage. Sky needs more work, piece needs fixative before that.

I'm really proud of this one. It's taught me that every pastel, cheap and expensive, has a use and a place.

This is a piece about polyamory.
