Imo we have a unfortunately unavoidable "small population" issue, which means the skill disparity isn't even enough at every rank

I've been matched against c rank players as s+5 bc the games matchmaking gives up if it takes more then a few minutes (you get "not enough players" in x often too)
November 20, 2025 at 10:01 PM
And I think this kind of thought process happens more often bc we've built a culture that incentives it(skill cap events that keep people comfortable staying in bubbles, lots of discord servers to seperate people into friendgroups and cliches but no actively used hub forum ala smogen, etc)

I think the main driver is as I said, people seeing change in the scene happen and going, to some degree "no, I don't want this, this will ruin my influence, this is the only thing I have" (I've heard of ppl in + downvoting literally everyone so they stay but thats just heresay on my part, for ex)
November 20, 2025 at 7:20 PM
Oh I should clarify as well I'm not saying malicious intentional action never happens I'm moreso saying I think its a secondary factor on top of a bigger culture issue we've build over time
November 20, 2025 at 7:18 PM
In the same way, that say someone who is 21 and has worked 3 different jobs might be
November 20, 2025 at 7:05 PM
Essentially what I'm saying when I say "I think its cultural but not necessarily malicious" is our scene has a large, potentially majority block of players in the age range where short sighted decision making is common(high school - early college years) and people tend to not be fully experienced
November 20, 2025 at 7:04 PM
I'm not sure about age range of other shooters but ancedotally other comp scenes I've been in (comp yugioh specifically) lean far in the other direction for other reasons (mid 20's - early 40s) which has its own unique dynamic you don't see in splatoon specifically
November 20, 2025 at 7:03 PM
(The claim of 50/50 is an approximation but backed up by the community census)

Ex people who approach splatoon as "this is the only thing worthwhile in my life" and their ego is directly tied to that, causing any change in the status quo being seen as a direct attack towards them
November 20, 2025 at 7:01 PM
With the age range of our scene being roughly 50/50 under 19 and over 20, with most being college age or younger, you have a fair amount of people in our scene who don’t have the same life experiences as our older crowd which creates a dynamic that is hard to explain in bskys text limit

You don't have to be good at the game to be good at managing people playing the game, iykwim

This was my goal when writing my team creation guide and if people ask I pretty much always share my more elaborate thoughts or personal advice if people come to me wanting to figure out how to sort out an interpersonal team related issue
November 20, 2025 at 5:35 PM
To elaborate on 3 I think playing the game above all else WITH THE SPECIFIC GOAL OF "getting better at the game" is the primary path upward, and soloq allows you to do it in an environment that is:
- not gatekept
- does not need to be scheduled
- drop in/drop out (can play as many or as few games)
November 20, 2025 at 5:33 PM
1. Yes but I think its more cultural then ppl being intentionally malicious
2. Easiest way imo is to incentive mixing skills up, but our skill bubble system w/ skill capped events disincentives that at present
3. My hot take is I think its the most efficent way by a mile, even over scrims
November 20, 2025 at 5:32 PM
I DID THAT FOR MY LAST INTERVIEW TOO LMFAOO
November 20, 2025 at 5:15 PM
