I suppose a general response to all of this... Obviously the internet *has* changed and things *are* different, but I think it's a little reductive to pin all of the blame on the age gap. Some of that is to blame, but not all. Plenty of young people are at the heart of the Indieweb right now.

It's especially difficult if your art isn't traditional... Or at least it was. Things have eased up a little and I've been able to slide my outsider art into orthodoxy-dominated spaces, but I still always feel like someone's eventually going to tell me it's not "real" just cuz its dot art
