I'm a scientist and amateur fantasy/science-fiction writer. Travel is good for you. Trans rights are human rights.
California, yes on 50 . . . And why?:

"It's a prisoner's dilemma.

The best outcome is all states "collaborate," gerrymandering is banned nationwide and to be fair.

But if some states do it, the states that don't are punished.

So, the next best outcome is for all states to do it."

When I was in middle school, I had the best friends I thought I'd ever have. Of course, we grew up, moved away, grew apart. I'm a different person than I was then, but that kid is still a part of me. I remember what it was like to be him. I wonder if my old friends do too.

Watching Only Lovers Left Alive, and I realize that I could totally believe that Tilda Swinton is a vampire

We're supposed to be doing an "orderly shutdown" at the lab now. But, my guys are doing as much last minute work as possible before they kick us out. I really admire my team sometimes.

Telling my team to prepare for the shutdown. We're better off than most, but it's always a hassle. And, honestly, a bit depressing.

I need to say this- I know a lot of trans people, and across the spectrum (don't forget that masc and NB folk exist) there persists a quiet truth: in spite of all the hate and harm against this community, trans people, in general, remain some of the kindest and compassionate beings I've ever met.

Sitting on a science staff meeting, the discussion of the House vs Senate NASA budget cuts . . . infuriating!

Look, I'm already not a religious person. I find the concept at odds with honest observation of the universe. However, I saw photos of a man I know to be a true piece of shit with the Pope today, and if that doesn't tell you all you need to know about organized religion, then I don't know what will.

Been in therapy for a couple years now. It's been really helpful, even if maybe not every session is as groundbreaking as I'd like it to be. Still, I sometimes end up getting cut to the core (in a good way) and I'm grateful for the insights that provides. Just trying to be a better person.

I understand that I have lived a fairly blessed life. I know I have been extremely lucky. Anyone who acknowledges their success but not how lucky they've been in pursuit of it is is somewhat dishonest. Like yes, hard work builds success, but hard work can be undone by misfortune.

Prioritize your self care. It doesn't have to be all the time, but you need to make time for yourself. One of the best things I ever did was remind myself "I can make plans with my friends".

Re: the "Department of War" nonsense.

This is the kind of thing that really reminds me that the people who follow and support this insanity really do, either through purpose or ignorance, worship death. They crave it.

They might as well put skulls on their uniforms . . . oh wait.

Taken from reddit. Internet people are so clever sometimes.

Just sat through a NASA town hall with our new acting director, Mr. Duffy. Same old same old from this administration: praise NASA in one breath, claim we're going to "win the next space race", and then admit they're not going to fund us in the next.

I want to read more books like the following: The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue, House of Leaves, The Starless Sea, Redshirts, The Magicians, The Dragonlance Chronicles, Perdido Street Station, The Martian, The Song of Achilles, Leviathan Wakes, Ninth House, Waking Gods . . . not an exhaustive list.

I want more badass immersive theater in the Bay Area. The Latitude, The Speakeasy, Infernal Motel . . . Such great experiences that I want to chase down.

@brennanleemulligan.bsky.social just wanted to shout out and say how much I appreciate the Dimension 20 content. It's not just that you all are hilarious, but also that you all seem like you actually are good friends playing D&D together. Reminds me of better more carefree days. #hellyeah

My PI just dropped the news that he's going to take the DRP, and that our budget direct funding line will likely be cut anywhere between 40% and 100%.

I saw this coming, but I held out hope that we might skate by.

It should be a surprise to absolutely no one that this and MTG's idiocy about banning human weather manipulation happened on the same day.

Wife: (looking at pile of DVDs at a cabin) "Wow, these must have been donated from some Millennials' DVD collection."

Me: "All DVD collections are Millennial DVD collections."

*We both pause and then cringe in Elder Millennial.
