Meat allergy you are at risk of acquiring simply by living near the woods - Galactose-α-1,3-galactose, "alpha-gal," is a carbohydrate found in almost all mammal cell membranes, and becomes an allergen when bit by some species of ticks. It's f*ckin bad!
It ain't easy reacting to cheesy...

The biggest question is what next? The CDC has previously recognized that this alpha-gal allergy being spread by ticks is spreading, rapidly and widely. More and more people are showing up with "mysterious gastrointestinal illnesses," mast cell activation syndrome, etc. We need testing and labeling!

Really, this was a hard read, and very relatable. The man and his family essentially had realized that he had bites, suspecting chiggers(Trombulicidae) over ticks or larval ticks, and realized he was having some kind of health problem or reaction, but he never was tested for the right things in time

Simple foods, like many spices, may have been compounded with stearates to improve flow and powder quality - but they do not have to report that on the label. While there are many meat-specific allergies, alpha-gal allergy includes many more potential sources.

It's not that deep. There is no big idealistic movement here. Having a supply chain that is less dependent on interspecies suffering is awesome, but really, I just want to breathe OK, eat normally, and have skin like a regular human. Is that really so much to ask for?

or something like that, but all I keep finding are fluoride-free "toothpastes," which has got to be the most bold faced oxymoron I've ever heard. I am so frustrated by all the brainless hippy-dippy nonsense. I want vegan and animal-free products because I don't want to suffer or die from an allergy!

Presumably, the Irish Spring soap is derived from tallow, and that would carry plenty of alpha-gal. I'm still amazed that animal byproducts can carry so much allergen. Regardless, new soap is on the way. In the mean time, I've been trying to find a toothpaste which is labeled animal-free, or vegan…

So much itching, so much pain, but almost nothing apparent on the surface. I don't really break out in hives, and I haven't had a full on true throat-closing anaphylaxis, but I did pass out later for a couple hours. My blood pressure drops precipitously whenever I have a big exposure to alpha-gal.
