As a mark of respect following the sad news of the passing The Duchess of Kent, the flag at Maidstone Town Hall is being flown at half-mast today.

The Duchess passed away peacefully last night at Kensington Palace, surrounded by her family.

Rest in peace.

The age of the building is not clear. 1395/6 is often cited as the date when the previous church on the site, dedicated to St Mary, was dismantled and completely rebuilt as All Saints.

A tomb of Archbishop William Courtenay (1342-1396) is in the chancel. Originally it was a box tomb but was then lowered, and finally lowered to be level to the floor. Strangely, Archbishop Courtenay also has a tomb in Canterbury cathedral.

The large stone monument behind the altar is known as a Reredos. It was placed here by the Monckton family and was dedicated by the Archbishop of Canterbury in 1904. It is in memory of Herbert John Monckton who died in the South African Campaign on 4 Feb 1902.
