In #JapaneseFolklore there is a giant crab #yokai known as kanibozu. These creatures take on the form of priests and move into empty temples. If a new priest arrives to lead the temple the kanibozu demands they answer a riddle & if they can't solve it, they get eaten.

it's really hard to not conclude that the early efforts to make sure Ebla doesn't end up as Ugarit 2 were nothing short of heroic and are probably one of the key reasons why we're not stuck with monographs arguing Kura is actually El or something

In early Chinese belief, polycoria, i.e., eyes with multiple pupils, was seen not as a defect, but a divine mark. Children born with such eyes were destined for greatness, their vision said to pierce beyond the ordinary. Legends say Cangjie, the creator of Chinese script, bore this sign, as did 1/2
