80 years ago today on the 12th May 1945 the Churchill Barriers were officially opened in #Orkney.
The four causeways were built in response to the sinking of the Royal Oak in Scapa Flow in 1939; their legacy became the permanent linking of 4 islands to the Orkney mainland.
