If you have more floor space than I do you could also lay the whole thing out and come up with a cleaner gradient than what I did.

This was my design. It was pretty simple though. 270 of 2.5" squares and 270 of 10.5" x 2.5" strips. I sewed a square on to each strip, then laid it out in five different chunks to figure out how I wanted it put together.

The trilobite I found and gave to my mom when I was little. She still has it in a terrarium somewhere.

The black one with the sheen was a grackle. Red and brown birds were house finches, and the ones after the woodpecker were a male and female Cardinal. There were also chickadees (little black and white), a blue jay, and a very quick titmouse.
