the vanity fair piece was a strategy, not a fuck-up.
Susie Wiles is considered across the board to be one of the smartest people in Washington. She assiduously avoids the limelight and NEVER does anything without a reason. Enter Chris Whipple, one of the go-to writers about the White House. He published "The Fight of His Life" (January 2023) a profile of Biden showing him as mentally sharp, energetic, and ready for a 2nd term. Then he wrote "Uncharted" (April 2025) which was ostensibly about how Trump got elected. But it was mostly a withering portrayal of Biden. Whipple described everyone around him as being in a "fog of delusion and denial" about his ability to lead. He also wrote "Gatekeepers" about chiefs of staff from H.R. Haldeman to John Kelly. So he asks to do a piece. She doesn’t agree naively. She has her motives. Susie knows who Whipple is. His books told everything she needed to know about his writing focus and style. They also tell her how to work him. He writes articles, sure. But also books. Which require press. Which means he’s used to and craves being interviewed himself. He likes access. It makes him feel important. Whipple called getting the interviews a "lightning strike" of his career because it's so rare for Susie to talk to reporters, and that he "was struck by how remarkably unguarded and candid she was." He told NPR: “Senior White House officials almost always speak to you on background. They require quotation approval. They're hardly ever on the record.” Whipple couldn’t believe his good fortune. At every turn, Susie was giving him access and insight he couldn’t imagine she would. It was almost too good to be true! That’s because it fucking was. Whipple got played.. Susie FUCKING Wiles - the Ice Maiden - doesn’t make mistakes.
