I show you astronomy. Messages are my own. Faculty at SSC. Volunteer for NASA.
Yes, there are auroras, (NOT in this picture) but also it is pretty cloudy here and getting cloudier. Please kindly request that the clouds move.

The equinox is almost here! My equinox sunset watch will be this FRIDAY (not Thursday) 6:30pm-7:30pm at Solstice Park! See you there!

(The equinox is Thursday, it's just my event that's the next day instead).

Go look at the Moon, Seattle!
March 14, 2025 at 5:38 AM
There's a total lunar eclipse coming up on Thursday night/Friday early morning (3/13-3/14). It peaks at midnight for us in Seattle.
What you need to know is that for Seattle:
starts at 8:57pm,
gets interesting at 10:10pm,
peaks at 11:58pm,
becomes less visible at 1:48am and
finishes at 3:00am.

Tonight is one of those beautiful clear winter nights we get in Seattle. We get very few, but they're amazing. If you look West and think "I've never seen a star THAT bright!" you're correct! That's the planet Venus. Next to it is Saturn. And then overhead:

I'll be at Solstice Park, here in West Seattle.

We'll celebrate the return of the Sun!
(Why yes, that is a Sun atop my tree—it's the best star after all!)
December 21, 2024 at 8:50 PM
If it is clear, I'll probably bring a scope tonight to show off the comet. Probably Westcrest North lot, (maaaaybe Lowman Beach or Constellation Park).
For best viewing, anywhere, bring your eyes and maybe binoculars (any kind!). Telephoto/zoom lenses are also useful! Look West after sunset.
October 13, 2024 at 4:55 PM
I have confirmed that these locations have decent view lines for the comet from West Seattle: Westcrest Park, Lowman Beach, Constellation Park, the view across from Mee-Kwa-Mooks, & Myrtle Reservoir walking paths.

Aurora alert. We have reached KP 8 on a scale that goes from 0-9. Usually these storms don't last long enough for the KP to still be this high by the time it is dark in Seattle, but the May storm did, so it is worth paying attention today. Clear skies tonight!

Obligatory: Bluesky now has over 10 million users, and I was #142,183!

I've got it in my phone sensor. I'll write alt text later but this is so light green at the bottom and purple at the top that the trained eye can't really see it. Marked image and original attached. 3 second exposure ish

Directions for how to find the Corona Borealis in the night sky suggest finding Hercules first—one of the most difficult to find because it is so dim. Let's do something else.

Corona Borealis itself is much easier to find. I suggest you use star hopping. Here's how:

This summer we are likely to have an unusual opportunity. There is a star in the constellation of Corona Borealis that is going to go nova. This means it is going to get much brighter, and it will look like the constellation has a new star for a short period of time.

This photo shows why I wasn't able to do the event yesterday on the actual solstice.
What do you notice?
June 22, 2024 at 5:38 AM
Here it is with local times. I was overly optimistic on what time the sun rises.
May 12, 2024 at 3:22 AM
@ Seattle . . . Yeah this is still worth your time tonight. West Coast night is in the red bracket on the left. East Coast night is in the blue on the right. Ish.

Hey Seattle, before the sun sets, if you still have your solar eclipse glasses you can see the sunspot that spawned the CMEs causing today's auroras!! Without magnification!
Use your solar eclipse glasses safely!

It's a little black dot.

The currently predicted aurora timing is perfect for Seattle, AND we have clear skies predicted.
This would be tomorrow (Friday) night for Seattle. Recall that predicting auroras is like predicting rainbows.

My advice is always here: alicesastroinfo.com/2015/09/auro...

Hopefully it won't fog up like yesterday.

TL;DR: There is NO fire (per realtime 911).
Depending on your source for air quality info, you may have seen this "wildfire" over West Seattle today, data attributed to NASA.
My hypothesis is that this is a detection of the Nucor steel mill in operation.
