I recently got an All Japan Puyo Association bulletin from March 1997, a few months after the release of Sun in arcades. In it the chairman of the association mentions that the latest Japanese national tournament had 20000 entrants.

For reference Evo 2025 had 8541 registered players.

WIP frame for the MISAGO mass production assault suit. The final line of defense for the corporate forces, a human piloted suit which can fly and attack with variety of projectile weapons.

Another sprite preview, this time for the second basic police enemy unit. This one focuses on kicks rather than punches, and in mixups rather than spacing.

WIP lariat run loop animation for Aisha. Like Victoria's specials, the attack strength used changes the move's function, from combo ender, extender, crowd control or a feint. Will post these variations soon!

Current discourse reminds me of this article I recently saw in Neo-Geo Freak 32 about an Asian promotional tour SNK did for the release of KOF '97 in Seoul, Hong Kong, Singapore, Jakarta and Shanghai. A small glimpse of how important KOF was at that time for these places.

All of these are KOF'97 machines from an arcade in Shanghai. Taken in December '24 by heartia2 at twitter. Game was insanely huge in China, probably why SNK does so many collabs with games from there.

For the last post of 2024, here's a preview for how the sprite of this experimental unit will look. Hopefully will have it animated soon next year!

This enemy can teleport either herself or her individual limbs to attack from diverse angles and make defense more difficult.

TRX-90 far melee attack WIP. While these units prefer ranged attacks, they do have some limited melee capabilities.

TRX-90 backdash WIP. This enemy is rather weak at close range, so they prefer to keep a distance and attack with projectiles from far away.

This was the old design I made for Raijin. I thought she lacked something, and thanks to @koutetuyarou.bsky.social her lightning elemental powers and mobility were emphasized and her design now looks more special and worthy of main character status, I think.
