I don't even recall why I bought this knife, years ago, when certain knife reviewers, who, in the interests of remaining knife reviewers, hype any new thing which comes in their mail. Maybe it was for that reason. I hated it the day it arrived, with its cheap hollow-sounding plastic handle, its half-hearted assisted opening metal-against plastic ka-chunk, like it was strung out on intravenous valium. The stupid "Special Operations Group" branding. I've spoken to this knife. Told it it was an ugly, miserable little knife: graceless, clumsy, and unsatisfying to use. Its stupid swell where the index finger goes. Miserable, unhappy ergos. I mean, look at it. Eww. It tries to make peace with me, telling me it wants to be my friend, and asking me what it has done to offend me so. I tell myself it is groveling and needy, when in reality, all it ever does is exactly what I ask it to. I cruelly run an Accusharp on it, a cheap knife sharpener known for removing excessive amounts of metal in an effort to get a knife just barely sharp enough to use. Unlike my Spydercos and Benchmades and the other knives I own, it doesn't get to go in a nice, dark, dust-free drawer. It sits out under my monitor. I dusted THREE days ago. Damn cats. But you can see it laving there between the Streamlight Microstream I use as my house flashlight, and one of those balisong-like bottle openers I bought for some reason. Years ago I relegated it to a beater knife when I was practicing knife sharpening. It got scratched up real good as I slipped across the sharpening stone. "You are DEMOTED. You are a BEATER knife. You are now a peasant!" But this is inaccurate. I use this contemptible knife for everything, in large part because I don't care if it gets scratched, covered in glue or tape, or the tip snaps off. For years it has served me, looking at me with big, wide, childlike, innocent eyes wondering how it wronged me for me to treat it so. "Have I not done everything you asked?" it will whisper, forlorn, when it senses my contempt. I give it no such satisfaction by answering, but in the wee hours I feel shame. Shame about the loveless relationship I have had with a knife that has yet to let me down. Shame about the cruel derision I have poured down on this innocent knife. Shame about all of my unused safe queens -- the knives with better blade steel, with sturdy G-10 or stainless steel handles I am partial to. Better actions. Hotter. With a little saving, I can afford any knife I want to carry. The first knife I bought after the Flash Il was a Benchmade Torrent, with its satisflying little thwick. And then a Barrage. I've carried them but I haven't used them. Why use the middle or upper middle-class knives when the lower class one, the outcast Flash Il, will do the heavy lifting instead? Why do I even buy knives anymore? I'm just going to use the damn Flash Il because I plunge it into things without the slightest attention to delicacy or mercy for the knife itself. I have sinned against the SOG Flash II. I mean I hate it but it loves me. I am bad at knife collecting. And a horrible human being. :(
