Abkhazia is in a very difficult position now: it’s people want true independence, Russia wants to keep it occupied and Georgian nationalists are getting quite vocal in their calls to take it back. The current situation is not just about Bzhania: it’s partly about Russia just taking it for granted.

He has fled to his native village: whether or not this is an admission of defeat, or merely a retreat to build back a position is in the air.
