Quite fascinated by the stark divide on purity tests among NDP supporters - I expect this will be litigated at the first NDP debate this week!

And that's something Canadians are united in as far away as Vancouver Island and the Northwest Territories!

The message is clear: the Jays are Canada's team, and even without a World Series trophy, they're champions in our hearts.
November 3, 2025 at 7:22 PM
In fact, the Jays are going to have more support than ever next season - 27% of survey respondents so far say they weren't Blue Jays fans before their recent success but have become Blue Jays fans now. That's over 10 million Canadians!

They also said they would be back next season to support the team and they still #WANTITALL

From coast, to coast, to coast and in both official languages, Canadians told me about the joy the Blue Jays have brought into their lives this fall.
November 3, 2025 at 7:22 PM
In this modern age of toxic social media, I expected some frustration as raw emotions took over, but that's not who Canadians are.

Respondents had a message they almost unanimously wanted to send to the Blue Jays: they did the nation proud. 🍁

I happened to be in field with a survey when the Blue Jays suffered one of the most painful World Series losses ever, so I checked in with Canadians across the country to see how they're processing things the day after.

The results reminded me why I'm proud to be Canadian 🧵

Finally, Tony Wakeham's win tonight gives him as many wins as a leader in provincial campaigns as he had wins as a player and coach combined in his college basketball career at Memorial.

(He's had success elsewhere - he's in the Newfoundland Basketball Hall of Fame)

I feel like we should be talking about this outrageous result in one Labrador riding.

Lela Evans crossed the floor 3 times after the last election (PC -> IND -> NDP -> PC) and clearly her constituents felt she represented all of them given the ludicrous 92.5% margin of victory.

The fact that we still see more men than women elected is more a result of a gap in the number of male and female candidates. The 2020s is the first decade in Canadian history where men did not make up more than two-thirds of all candidates for federal office, and we're still far away from parity.
July 25, 2025 at 7:12 PM
There's lots of discussion about whether men are more electable - that seems to have been the case before 1990, but the gap in the % of male and female candidates who win has shrunk to only a couple of points in modern day. #cdnpoli

I've been combing through the 48,717 names that have appeared on federal election ballots in Canada to look at trends and interesting stories.

One thing I noticed is how competitive races have become. Before 1900, more than half of all candidates who ran for office won, but that's dropped to 16%

Here's a poll question that's good news for the NDP, but bad news for Jagmeet Singh:

Remaining NDP voters aren't as motivated by party leadership, but the NDP is holding onto voters who vote locally, which could allow their most prominent MPs to outperform the party on Election Day.

The other useful context here is that political spectrum calculations are only a minor factor in how swing voters decide their ballot. Whether voters think a leader can deliver positive outcomes for them is a far more important factor in influencing voters to pick a favourite candidate.

A majority of voters from all major parties feel Carney is the more progressive of the two Liberal leaders, with the highest numbers coming among Liberals themselves.

People voting for Carney right now are more likely to say he's moving the party to the left than the right!
April 24, 2025 at 7:44 PM
According to my latest survey, Canadians think Mark Carney is *more progressive* than Justin Trudeau.

A fascinating data point that has really gotten me thinking about the way we talk about the political spectrum in Canada.

No one really knew what to expect from the Green platform (left) other than climate promises.

The actual Green platform is longer than the LPC, CPC and NDP platforms combined and doesn't have many consistent themes other than a pretty significant focus on Indigenous issues.
April 22, 2025 at 6:08 PM
The expectations for the NDP platform (left) were pretty close in language the the actual platform text (right).Healthcare is a central theme in both cases.

The language of the NDP platform is very focused on "people" and outcomes that are personal for Canadians.
April 22, 2025 at 6:08 PM
Canadians expected the Conservatives to promise tax cuts and spending cuts (left).

The actual CPC platform (right) does talk a lot about taxes, but not much about cuts. It's the only platform to mention an opposing party a lot and it reads a lot like a comms document.
April 22, 2025 at 6:08 PM
Canadians expected (left) the Liberals to talk about Trump, the economy, housing and repealing the carbon tax.

The most commonly used words in the actual Liberal platform (right) include "build", "invest", "protect", leaning into themes of securing the economy.

The playoffs are back!

I'm not sure if it says more about the Toronto Maple Leafs or the current global instability we're seeing, but Canadians now think World War III is more likely than the Leafs winning the Stanley Cup

The shift in voting intentions in Canada since late 2024 has been unprecedented. I asked Canadians who have changed their mind on who to vote them to tell me the reason behind their decision in their own words:
