Kind of connected: my mother is a programmer by trade/training, but got out of the game in the 90s. She was telling me about how she and her coworkers had (e.g.) all the sorting algos memorized bc they were doing so much more from scratch every time. Very quaint compared to ‘import numpy as np’

I think it was Bucklew who (some time ago) was talking about how the advent of the package manager didn’t destroy the profession, bc there’s always an interface to program, and glue to create. Anyways the real job is to implement business logic

Lately I’ve been doing spec-driven development and it’s pretty fun. I think that the quality of my code is better off for it, but I sometimes feel dissociated from the actual work

rising wages in the lowest quintile was captured as economic pain in survey after survey -- e.g., complaints that retail establishments had extraordinary difficulty hiring people at or near minimum wage! people believe that "help wanted" signs mean that businesses are in serious trouble.
