Love the recipes functionality SideFX introduced in Houdini 20.5. It proved to be very useful. You don't need to rely on HDAs for some additional functionality anymore or legacy presets system. It's way easier now to extend existing nodes with recipes. Such a time saver!

Blender 4.5 LTS is here. It's the final and the best release in the 4.x cycle. Great version to use for production fr at least two next years.

Sometimes you need the very granular control in post but if you instance your geo in Houdini there is no way to pick individual pieces with cryptomatte. Unless you make a custom setup. Here is a short tip how to do it in Karma.

Learned the smart way to optimize the simulation of cloth and then cast the high res mesh to low res sim with Point Deform node. Especially useful when you want your mesh to be quads but simulated triangulated mesh.

Made a small HDA in Houdini to place points on a curve at precise positions. Something I needed in other projects. Only lacking some viewport functionally for now to easily manipulate points.

Daaamn! The new variables functionality in Nuke is fantastic. I was surprised something like this wasn't there before and you had to duplicate everything in your scripts. Now you can work super lean, like in Houdini's Solaris with clear scripts. Can't go back to not having this feature.

While very powerful, Nuke has one of the craziest UI. This small black triangle on a dark background of the file browser menu hides super useful preview functionality. I've never even seen this triangle before it was pointed out to me. Icons in Nuke are just terrible.

Might be useful for some. Using VEX to easily strip characters from a string from an attribute when importing geo. Helps to organize geo in Houdini when the result is stored at s@name attribute.

Learning the ins and outs of the retiming in Houdini and all its quirks when retiming different types of simulations and animations. Which there are quite a few to be aware of for a better result. Still, it's a powerful way to control adjust sims animation after the fact.

Cloth explorations in Renderman. A curious renderer that remindes me Octane in some way. It left a positive impression so far. I especially like lighting toolset and LAMA material system. The only downside so far is that it doesn't support multi-GPU setups.
