Text reads: Un/Problematic Masculinities This session aims to explore the often hidden interstices of masculinist discourse in late antiquity. The claim to manhood in antiquity involved walking a tightrope of social expectations focused on speech, dress, comportment, sexuality, and many other facets of a man’s life. A man who failed at any element of this rubric risked losing his vaulted status as a man among his elite peers. We are interested in the cracks and crevasses of ancient masculinity and the masculine and unmasculine tropes, scripts, spirits, and bodies that inhabit these spaces. We invite papers exploring any aspect of masculinity (broadly construed) within late antiquity, including (but not limited to) patriarchal discursive constructions of manhood, moments of subversion or counter-cultural resistance to masculinist ideals, and queer/trans figures who embody deviations from the ideology of masculinity.
