This proposal seems to indicate that the subsidized affordable housing will all be concentrated in one building (the one on the busy road, naturally) rather than being distributed across locations. Haven't we learned that this is a bad idea? Alexandria should push back on this.

While other candidates gave vague (or no) answers on difficult questions, you unfailingly gave honest and direct responses that made it clear where you stood. Alexandria (and politics in general) would be much better off if more people like you ran for office. Thank you for running!

I'm leaning towards voting for only four council candidates: Sarah, Kirk, Canek, Jesse. I trust these four to carry the city forward regardless of who else wins, and I can't say that about anyone else running for council. The drop-off after these four is significant in my view.

Genuine question for you or others: if transportation is my biggest issue (and let's assume Duke Street in motion is a good proxy for my preferences on the issue), which candidates do you think are best?

Forgive me, Rob, I know you are diligently pursuing honest answers on difficult questions and I admire your efforts. But the problem isn't that Lewis lacks a clear vision on housing. The problem is that his vision is crystal clear: he's against dense housing as long as neighbors throw a fit about it

Despite saying he supports ZFH, Lewis is the president of the Holmes Run Civic Association that is opposed to a large affordable housing project on the west end (www.alxnow.com/2022/02/10/w...).
West End massive affordable housing apartment complex going to City Council on Saturday | ALXnow
(Updated at 11 a.m.) West End residents are fuming over Wesley Housing's plan to expand a 14-story 1970s-era apartment building into a three-building affordable apartment complex. Plans for the ParcVi...

This doesn't sound like someone who is a strong advocate for Duke Street BRT. Using coverage ("accessibility") as an excuse to design a lower-ridership system is exactly the type of argument opponents use to kill projects like this.

I know it looks a little complicated, but I promise I'm not very handy and it was actually pretty easy. Just a drill, screws, and some washers to hold the hardware cloth on. You can usually find a free/cheap old door that has lost the screen and then just cover it with hardware cloth.

I spent years buying every net and cage product I could find and they pretty much all failed. Eventually I built a cage using 8-foot 2x4s and 1-inch mesh hardware cloth (bees can get through but birds can't). It's a bit of an investment time-wise, but the raspberries and blueberries are worth it!

For me, James Lewis is this candidate. He gives soft answers on every issue, constantly trying to appeal to both sides without ever actually taking a position on anything. Throw in his T&PB vote against the Seminary Road diet and it's clear he isn't a good fit for anyone who supports these issues.

Can you clarify what they changed from the proposed SUP? Thanks for following this!

I think you're right that we need to start with the question: what do we want to be great at? We're never going to fix all our problems (mediocre schools, high taxes, crummy infrastructure, etc), but we can at least decide on a direction and build towards that. So what are we building towards?

They actually switched contractors halfway through the project because there were so many complaints about the repair work. In my experience the second contractor had been doing a better job, but it's definitely possible that has changed (or they've switched again). Submit complaints to the 311.

I will also be considering doing this (although too early to make that decision, of course). In the case that there are four great candidates and another five+ indistinguishable candidates, I wouldn't want to risk pushing one of the great ones out by voting for one or two of the indistinguishables.

Is it a fair reading of this to say that James Lewis is clearly a NIMBY? He literally opposes a large affordable housing project near his house?

Like you, I'm firm on four plus the mayor, no idea on the other two.

FYI, the school site shown in that picture has been planned since the North Potomac Yard SAP was amended in 2020 as part of the Amazon/Virginia Tech deal (the school site had previously been located where the VA Tech building is now being built). More info here: www.alexandriava.gov/neighborhood...

Mt. Vernon Ave should be lined with 5-story condo buildings. Let the next generation's new families move here and let older folks stay here.

When Alexandria planned the VT campus in PY, JBG/VT wanted a parking lot next to the building. The city said no. JBG said, ok, project cancelled. The city caved and now we'll have a parking lot right next to a metro station. Same thing would happen if the city played hardball on zoning. Money talks.

I think this is right... people who at one point dominated the direction of local politics are now often in a minority on important issues. And the result of that change is confusion and anger.
March 27, 2024 at 4:53 PM
I was just saying this yesterday: there are plenty of legitimate concerns about the arena, so why do so many people resort to accusations of bad faith and other personal attacks? How did our local politics become so toxic that we can't even discuss this very important issue in a constructive way?

just a cynical play for votes. I don't believe she's actually against it if the state somehow comes up with a better deal.
