Everything that's wrong with legal journalism in one New York Times headline and pie chart.
If all these "legal experts" are so shocked by the threats to the rule of law, maybe they're not the experts we should be asking in the first place.
All of this was foreseeable. Many forecast it.

Thinking ahead to 2028—MAGA will cheat relentlessly to win, and refuse to hand back power if it loses. These are all but certainties.
The notion that anyone will (or should) care what John Roberts & Co. have to say about any of it is laughable. They made this mess. We’ll clean them out with it.

Here’s Kirk’s pal Kevin Roberts last year, promising that the second American Revolution would be bloodless only if “the left allows it to be.”
But yeah let’s debate these guys.

Ezra Klein can conclude that Kirk was “practicing politics the right way” only because, as we see here, he still fundamentally misapprehends the MAGA project.
MAGA explicitly DOES see this as a war, not an argument. Its entire aim is to STOP the continued possibility of American politics.

White Christian Taliban shit right here.
Time to stop tiptoeing around it. These people are fanatics pursuing a Holy War. It’s a critical piece of the threat assessment that should inform our strategies. (Psst. They’re not just going to hand back power.)

As with most of our misery, the race to the bottom on gerrymandering was the inevitable end game of the Roberts Court’s corrupt Rucho decision.
Dark money, gerrymandering, voter suppression. All GOP tools of autocracy, forged and honed by the Roberts Court.

We also learn that Justice Gorsuch maintains a "friendship" with Mike Davis, the jackboot Trump legal advisor who led the Kavanaugh cover-up and calls for putting journalists in "gulags."
Apparently that's all fine by Gorsuch, but Davis crossed a line by mocking the size of ACB's family.

Important reporting from @jodikantor.bsky.social on Justice Barrett.
Lots of thoughts, but it feels safe to infer from this that Brett Kavanaugh, after being credibly charged with sexual assault and perjury, was the fourth and decisive vote to grant cert in Dobbs.

Miller’s tweet doesn’t just foreshadow invocation of the Insurrection Act, it reveals the regime’s monarchical designs.
Trump is not our sovereign. It is we, the people, who are sovereign.

Alito simply scandalized. These immigrant habeas petitioners had the gall to ask the district court for emergency relief on Good Friday. (Apparently that’s now a federal holiday?)
But deporting them all without due process on Good Friday (as the regime appeared to be doing)? Just groovy by Sam.

Wall Street economist types are only "bewildered" and "uncertain" about Trump's tariffs because they refused to take Project 2025 seriously.
The plan was always chaos, trauma, and total collapse of the postwar order. They're hollowing us out to create a vacuum for pluto-theocratic domination.

Or—just a thought—maybe this is Roberts’ agenda too?
And what “legitimacy,” exactly?
Will The New York Times ever stop telling us about the emperor’s resplendent clothes?
